Job summary

Qualifications

Position Overview

As a Controls Manager at a Modigent operating company, you will lead Building Automation and Controls operations across construction and service. You will set the strategy for the automation team, oversee project execution, service delivery, programming, and system performance, and serve as the subject matter expert for BAS/BMS platforms. This role partners with Sales, Preconstruction, Operations, and customers to grow the controls business while delivering reliable, high-performing building automation solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead, develop, and scale Rocky Mountain Mechanical’s ACES automation division across both construction and service teams.
  • Develop and execute the strategic vision for the ACES automation division, including growth initiatives, technology adoption, workforce development, and operational excellence.
  • Act as the primary internal leader for execution teams on assigned projects, interfacing with and providing direction to internal and external teams for successful project execution. Develop project schedules and execute according to plan.
  • You will be involved in many areas of Building Automation and Energy Management Controls, and will perform duties in Controls Service, Construction Startup and Controls Programming.
  • Oversee all BAS/BMS service operations including maintenance, troubleshooting, retrofits, and system optimization.
  • Serve as Rocky Mountain Mechanical’s and ACES’ subject matter expert for building automation systems and controls integration.
  • Support service teams with complex diagnostics and system performance issues.
  • Implement best practices to improve system uptime, response times, and service delivery consistency.
  • Build a high-performance culture focused on safety, accountability, technical excellence, and customer satisfaction.
  • Establish career paths, training programs, and succession planning for technicians, programmers, project managers, and engineers.
  • Partner with Service and Construction leadership to align automation strategy with company growth objectives.
  • Partner with Sales, Preconstruction, and Account Management teams to deliver value-driven automation solutions.
  • Engage with customers during both project and service phases to ensure satisfaction and identify new opportunities.
  • Support proposals, estimates, and technical presentations for construction and service work.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for energy savings, system upgrades, and long-term customer partnerships.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for building automation platforms including, but not limited to: Tridium Niagara, Alerton, and Trane.
  • Interface, schedule, coordinate, and collaborate with project team members for project delivery requirements, including change orders, estimates, proposals, and customer acceptance.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Yes – Direct leadership of controls technicians, programmers, and related project or service personnel. Responsible for coaching, performance management, workload planning, and team development.

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience: 8+ years of progressive experience in building automation, controls, or energy management systems, including a mix of service, construction start-up, and programming. Prior people-leadership experience is required.
  • Education: Associate or bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Building Automation, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Relevant manufacturer or platform certifications (Tridium Niagara, Alerton, Trane, or similar) preferred. Valid driver’s license required.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with regular job site visits. Ability to walk active construction and occupied facility environments as needed.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Combination of office and field environments. This is a safety-sensitive leadership position. Adherence to company safety policies and OSHA standards is required.
