Job description

Position Overview

As a Controls Technician IV, you'll serve as a master-level expert and senior field leader in commercial building automation and controls. With full mastery of DDC/BAS platforms, sequences of operation, advanced troubleshooting, and system integration, you'll lead complex retrofit and service projects, resolve escalated technical issues, oversee crews, mentor junior technicians, and ensure optimal performance and reliability of controls systems. This senior role demands technical excellence, strong leadership, safety commitment, and the ability to deliver high-impact results that support sustainable, efficient building operations nationwide.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead complex service, retrofit, and commissioning projects involving building automation systems, DDC controls, sensors, actuators, valves, and integration with HVAC equipment.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, programming adjustments, and optimization of controls systems to achieve design intent and exceed performance expectations.
  • Plan and execute full startups, functional testing, system balancing, and commissioning for sophisticated installations with minimal supervision.
  • Oversee and direct controls technician crews on major jobs: delegate tasks, monitor progress, ensure quality and safety compliance, and provide daily updates.
  • Collaborate with General Foremen, Superintendents, and Project Managers to develop retrofit plans, resource requirements, and risk assessments.
  • Conduct detailed site surveys, provide written reports, and recommend proactive solutions to prevent issues from escalating.
  • Ensure all work complies with EPA regulations, building codes, manufacturer specifications, and Modigent safety and quality standards.
  • Mentor and train Controls Technicians I–III by demonstrating advanced techniques, sharing best practices, and supporting their professional growth.
  • Document work thoroughly (work orders, reports, photos, as-builts, recommendations) and maintain accurate records for billing, warranty, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion safety leadership through daily hazard assessments, toolbox talks, and enforcement of PPE and OSHA requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Provides direct leadership and supervision to controls technician crews and subordinate technicians (Levels I–III); responsible for task delegation, performance monitoring, safety compliance, mentoring, and contributing to team development.

Requirements / Qualifications
  • Experience: 7+ years (typically 8–10+ preferred) of progressive hands‑on experience in building automation/controls installation, startup, retrofit, and service with full mastery of technical aspects.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, trade school certificate, or technical training in HVAC, controls, electronics, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: EPA Section 608 certification (Universal required); advanced controls certifications (e.g., Niagara/Tridium, BACnet, or manufacturer‑specific) strongly preferred; valid driver’s license and clean driving record required; OSHA 30‑hour certification encouraged.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, scaffolding, stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, rooftops, mechanical rooms, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, electrical hazards, and extreme temperatures; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel‑toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non‑negotiable. This is a safety‑sensitive position. Frequent regional travel within assigned market or on‑call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.
Required Skills
  • Mastery‑level diagnostics, troubleshooting, programming, and optimization across commercial controls/BAS and HVAC systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with controls platforms (BACnet, LON, Tridium/Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell) and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities with excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Safety leadership, documentation/reporting, multitasking, and independent decision‑making in high‑pressure situations.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and sequences of operation.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation based on experience and level, with opportunities for performance incentives.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus HSA options with employer contributions in select plans, and company‑paid basic life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
  • Paid time off, holiday pay, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan to support your long‑term financial well‑being.
  • Professional development through hands‑on training, mentorship, apprenticeships, certifications, and clear career advancement paths across our nationwide operating companies.
  • Inclusive, supportive culture that values diversity, dignity, respect, collaboration, integrity, and personal fulfillment—empowering you to build a rewarding, long‑term career.
