Job summary

Trane Technologies is seeking a cost estimator to develop detailed scope and price multiple projects related to building automation and HVAC systems. You will prepare comprehensive estimates, coordinate with vendors, and support Account Managers in bid strategies.

The role requires a degree in engineering or equivalent practical experience, strong financial acumen, and the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Hybrid onsite/work-location flexibility is provided.

Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field with 3–5 years in estimating, engineering, construction management; or 5–7 years controls field experience.
  • Experience with Building Automation, HVAC Controls and HVAC Systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems preferred.
  • Strong financial and business acumen with a history of on-time, on-budget projects.
  • Willingness to work overtime/weekends as required.
  • Valid driver’s license for at least 12 months with clean record.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates covering materials, sub-contractors, equipment, labor and other costs.
  • Develop detailed scope from design-build plans for competitive bidding.
  • Create cost estimates with vendor/sub-contractor quotes and scope definitions.
  • Take-off and price purchased equipment ensuring quantity and specs accuracy.
  • Conduct pre-bid meetings with Account Managers to review scope and strategy.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and risk items across projects.
  • Negotiate prices with vendors/sub-contractors to optimize costs.
  • Assist with outsourcing engineering involvement and control cost variations.

Job description

Where is the work:

Monday to Thursday, work onsite with your colleagues. Fridays, choose your work location, balancing what your work requires.

What you will do:
  • Responsible for the cost estimates consisting of materials, sub-contractors, purchased equipment, labor (start-up, service work, etc.), and other construction-related activities created by personnel to assist Account Managers in bidding on or determining price of project.
  • Develops detailed scope based on Account Managers design-build scope or plans and specifications developed and published for competitive bidding through contracting channels.
  • Creates detailed cost estimates including system sketches, scope definition, exceptions/exclusions, preliminary proposal, vendor/sub-contractor quotes, and points list.
  • Responsible for the take-off and pricing of purchased equipment to ensure accuracy of quantity, size, configuration, voltage, options, etc.
  • Responsible for holding pre-bid meeting with Account Managers to review scope, strategy, etc.
  • Responsible for identifying possible cost saving opportunities and/or risk items that will occur on various projects.
  • Optimizes job costs by negotiating prices with vendors/sub-contractors through quotations for materials and services.
  • Assist Account Manager with determining the need for out-sourced engineering involvement and work with Operations / Fulfillment group to improve and control cost variations in labor, material and electrical subcontract through pre-bid validation and post mortems.
What you will bring:
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field with minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in estimating, engineering, construction management; or five (5) to seven (7) years of controls field experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience in estimating, engineering or construction management. Candidates without a 4-year degree are encouraged to apply; we prioritize practical experience, relevant skills, and alignment with our leadership principles.
  • Must have proven experience with Building Automation, HVAC Controls and HVAC Systems.
  • Working knowledge of all facets of construction including mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, etc. preferred.
  • Must have strong financial and business acumen and a history of running projects on time and on budget.
  • Proven experience prioritizing tasks in order to meet tight deadlines within a high-paced environment with attention to detail.
  • Experience working directly with building owners is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work overtime/weekends, as required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations included, but not limited to: DUI, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless/Careless Driving or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions in the previous 3 years.
Annual Base Salary Range or Hourly Base Pay Range:
