Job summary

Design Group, part of Barry-Wehmiller, seeks a Controls Engineer in Austin, TX to join our control system integration practice. You will work with industry experts to deliver high-quality automation solutions for leading manufacturers and participate in design, configuration, testing, and commissioning across projects.

You will design control systems, program PLCs/HMIs, interface with clients and vendors, and manage deliverables to schedule while supporting site installation and startup.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–8 years of direct experience as a controls engineer in automated manufacturing environments.
• Experience designing automation control systems (PLC/SCADA) and related documentation.
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering or similar technical field (preferred).
• Willingness to travel 50%+ for regional projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop automation solutions across design specs, software configuration, testing, commissioning for high-speed manufacturing processes.
• Design automation control systems and create project drawings to meet client requirements.
• Interface with teams, clients, and vendors to ensure alignment on scope and deliverables.
• Configure software and hardware per client design specifications.
• Program PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Rockwell) and HMIs (FactoryTalk, Cimplicity, Wonderware, Ignition).
• Communicate plan progress to stakeholders and manage deliverables to schedule and scope.
• Oversee site construction, installation, and startup support for integrated control systems.
• Ensure validation and turnover of systems to customers following approved protocols.
