Job summary

Corning is seeking a Controls Engineer to design, build, and commission automation equipment in the OCS Technology Automation Development Group. You will collaborate with controls, mechanical, and project teams to deliver reliable automation systems that meet objectives and performance requirements.

The role emphasizes hands-on engineering, development of advanced automation solutions, and problem solving in a fast-paced environment. Travel up to 25% may be required for startup and commissioning.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited B.S. in Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Willingness to travel up to 25% for installation and commissioning.
• Ability to read electrical drawings and schematics.
• Fundamental electrical engineering principles and safety standards knowledge.
• Experience with electrical codes such as NFPA 70E, NEC, UL 508A.
• Capability to work with up to 480 VAC power, tools, and test equipment.
• Proficiency with hand tools, multimeters, and electrical test gear.
• 3–5 years of electrical/controls engineering in automation environments.
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar CAD software.
• Automation equipment assembly, wiring, and commissioning experience.
• PLC hardware and programming; Omron Sysmac Studio preferred.
• I/O checkout and basic troubleshooting of automated equipment.
• Programming languages: C#, C++, Python.
• Industrial networks: EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, serial protocols.
• Servo drives, motion control, sensors, instrumentation basics.
• Lockout/tagout and industrial safety familiarity.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate requirements into control designs.
• Develop and maintain controls architecture documentation for stakeholders.
• Source electrical and controls components meeting performance and cost targets.
• Design user-friendly HMIs for monitoring and control of machines.
• Troubleshoot and modify equipment for development, testing, and commissioning.
• Support safety reviews and regulatory compliance.
• Work with mechanical, toolmaking, programming, and electrical teams to deliver complete solutions.
