Job summary

Trane Technologies in the United States is seeking a Controls Engineer to design building automation systems and control sequences for a variety of building types. You will review contract documents, create installation drawings, and ensure smooth handoff to field teams while applying HVAC principles and IT/network concepts.

The role requires familiarity with HVAC systems, building automation, drafting software, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field; or 3+ years in HVAC project management or estimating.
  • Candidates without a 4-year degree are encouraged to apply; practical experience is valued.
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems, building automation, and temperature controls.
  • Experience with new construction/renovation, performance contracting, and service project management preferred.
  • Windows OS and Microsoft Office knowledge.
  • Experience with a drafting/design program is required.
  • Understanding IT infrastructure and network architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Design building controls using direct digital controls for multiple building types.
  • Review contract documents and proposals for automation system designs.
  • Create installation, submittal, and as-built drawings and transition to service.
  • Develop advanced sequences of operations to meet project requirements.
  • Produce operation and maintenance manuals and review equipment submittals.
  • Coordinate transition of designs to field teams.
  • Maintain knowledge of Trane Controls products and applicable third-party devices.
  • Support and mentor other engineers and maintain customer satisfaction.

What's In It For You

Trane in New England is hiring for a Controls Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for hardware design activities for building automation systems. Applies engineering principles and practices for work on assigned projects. Designs cost effective control solutions to meet project requirements.

What You Will Do
  • Responsible for building controls design utilizing direct digital controls on a variety of building types.
  • Responsible for obtaining and reviewing contract documents; proposals mechanical plans, specifications, estimates, equipment submittals, etc. for incorporation into the design of an automation system.
  • Responsible for creating installation drawings, submittal drawings, as-built drawings, and transition to service.
  • Responsible for advanced sequences of operations, which meet the project requirements.
  • Generates Operation and Maintenance Manuals, as well as responsible for reviewing contract documents and conducting job surveys. Reviews equipment submittals for incorporation into design.
  • Responsible for transitioning these documents to the field.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of Trane Controls products and offerings along with applicable 3rd party devices.
  • Capability to work with minimal supervision as well as the ability to advise and guide other engineers.
  • Maintains customer satisfaction by investigating concerns, implementing corrective action, communication with staff, providing customer feedback and solutions.
What You Will Bring
  • Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Construction or Engineering Technology, or other related areas; or three (3) plus years of experience in the HVAC industry performing project management or estimating roles; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Candidates without a 4-year degree are encouraged to apply; we prioritize practical experience, relevant skills, and alignment with our leadership principles.
  • Familiarity with operation and design of HVAC Systems, Building Automation Systems, and/or Temperature Controls required.
  • Familiarity with the concepts of new construction and renovation/retrofit, performance contracting, and service project management preferred.
  • Windows operating system and Microsoft Office product knowledge.
  • Experience with a drafting/ design program is required.
  • Understanding of industry standard protocol and requirements for integration preferred.
  • Understanding of IT infrastructure and network architecture.
