Overview

The position of Controls Engineer is responsible for the continuous improvement of plant processes and equipment including design, PLC program changes, equipment upgrades, electrical documentation, uptime improvements, and maintenance expense reduction.

Responsibilities

Engagement

  • Works respectfully with all team members to ensure the Safety, Quality, production and support of our products and goals on a daily basis.

  • Actively participates in Marzetti Operational Excellence, special projects or tasks, and modification programs as needed with prior approval.
  • Actively participates in department/shift/team meetings and is involved with improvement/resolutions & follow-up.

  • Maintains highest standard of Safety for all functions on an ongoing basis and ensures compliance for self and others to OSHA standards.
  • Performs daily inspection of all PPE required including slip‑resistant/steel‑toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, shields and aprons to ensure good overall condition of items that provide optimal personal safety & protection while working in the facility.
  • Successfully acquires and maintains Lock Out-Tag Out Certification for machine and safely performs all functions in accord with OSHA and company requirements and standards.
  • Successfully acquires and maintains NFPA 70E Certification in accordance with OSHA and company requirements and standards.
  • Performs daily inspection of power equipment with proper documentation.
  • As a member of the T. Marzetti Company, completes their Behavior Based Safety Observations (BBSO), corrects issues when identified and participates in problem solving.

  • Leads and promotes a strong Food Safety Culture within the facility.
  • Completes their Behavior Based Quality observations (BBQs), corrects issues when identified and participates in problem solving.
  • Ensures compliance to quality, Food Safety Preventive Control (FSPC), FSMA, Food Defense, OSHA and other support programs; assures conformity to all company, customer and government standards.
  • Reviews, understands, and complies with all applicable SOPs containing Process or Preventive Control monitoring or verification, if trained and designated as a Qualified Individual (QI).
  • Communicates any concerns related to product safety, integrity, quality and legality to management or to the confidential hotline if the need for anonymity is necessary.

Functional Capability

  • Promotes integrity, respect, accountability, continuous improvement and positive interactions with all Team Members, customers & vendors.
  • Supports the daily machine uptime and plant operations.
  • Possesses good troubleshooting skills for electrical and electronic problems related to PLC/HMI, PLC‑Network and AC/DC Drive issues, or Temperature controls and Heating Controls.
  • Designs electrical control systems and electrical prints.
  • Leads machine improvement and machine upgrade projects.
  • Designs, installs, maintains, and modifies PLC systems.
  • Understands and can install and troubleshoot AC/DC drives and motors.
  • Motor control circuits from 480 VAC, 208/120 VAC, 24 VDC, 12 VDC; understands and can install and troubleshoot AC/DC drives and motors.
  • Understands and can work with relays, contacts, transformers, motor starters, sensors, switches, etc.
  • Provides technical support and software changes of PLC based equipment.
  • Assists maintenance supervisors with machinery issues.
  • Reduces repeat downtime issues on machines.
  • Assists in start‑up of new technology.
  • Contributes to cost savings ideas and efforts.
  • Analyzes new designs supplied by new machine sales reps.
  • Maintains regular attendance in accordance with Company attendance policy and procedures.
  • Performs additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned by Management.
  • Completes initial/annual training to ensure the individual is properly qualified (QI) to perform all required job tasks as outlined in training programs/records.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in modifying, uploading, and downloading programs, design and programming of manufacturing controls using Allen Bradley, operator interface devices and AC/DC Drives.
  • Experience with Ethernet & Network Communication.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Knowledge on how to modify, upload, download, programs on Allen Bradley Panel View, Panel View Plus, and Panel View Plus 6 programs.
  • Complete knowledge of and ability to design and use relay logic, ladder logic, pneumatic logic and hydraulic logic.
  • Industrial experience with electrical control systems.
  • Ability to write in advanced control system programming.
  • Experience with SQL Server and batch management systems preferred.
  • Mechanical knowledge of process machinery to support machine improvements and implementation for new equipment.
  • Flexible schedule to support varying shifts when needed.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.

Working Conditions/Environment
  • Works in a manufacturing environment where the Team Member is regularly required to stand, walk, reach, lift, grasp, climb, and bend while working in a fast‑paced production environment.
  • Must be able to push/pull 75 pounds short distances.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Stand for up to 12 hours with regular breaks.
  • May be required to work overtime and/or weekends as needed.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to heat, fumes, odors, dust, oil, slippery floors, moving parts/equipment and non‑toxic industrial waste and scrap.
  • Slip‑resistant/steel‑toed shoes, earplugs, safety glasses, hairnets, beard nets (if facial hair exists) are required to be worn/used in accordance with company GMP and Safety standards. Employees must inspect the condition of these items daily and replace said items when they are no longer providing the optimal protection of the Team Member.
