Job summary

Fives Cincinnati is seeking a Software Engineer to design, support, and maintain the control software for our composite laying equipment, featuring gantry and robotic manipulators.

You will work with Siemens Sinumerik platforms, CNC integration, and Windows/RTOS targets, collaborating with a cross‑functional team to deliver reliable, safe, and scalable control solutions.

Qualifications

• BS in Engineering (Electrical or Computer) or Computer Science is preferred; relevant experience may substitute.
• 5+ years in controls/software development for industrial automation is preferred.
• US citizenship or permanent residency required.

Responsibilities

• Target code to run on Siemens Sinumerik One & 840D.
• Use TIA Portal or Step 7 for CNC integration.
• Develop in Microsoft Visual Studio environments.
• Target code for Windows and InTime RTOS.
• Manage source control with Mercurial and Git.
• Plan for C# and Indusoft development for future HMIs.
• Utilize OPC-UA, Access Databases, and Modbus-TCP.
• Improve performance and expand control system functionality.
• Participate in cross-functional design reviews.
• Troubleshoot electro-mechanical and software issues.
• Communicate effectively, work well in a team with minimal supervision.

Description of Typical Duties

• Target code to run on Siemens Operate platforms such as Sinumerik One & 840D
• Use TIA Portal or Step 7 development environments for CNC integration
• Use Microsoft's Visual Studio develop environments
• Target code to run on Windows and Intime RTOS
• Manage source controlled with Mercurial and Git.
• Plans for C# and/or Indusoft development for future HMIs.
• Utilize OPC-UA, Access Databases, and Modbus-TCP on various applications.
• Focus on continuously improving and optimizing system performance and increasing control system functionality and capability.
• Participate in cross-functional design reviews.
• Troubleshoot electro-mechanical and software issues.
• Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Work well in a team and with minimal supervision.

Preferred Additional Skills

• Experiene writing and maintaining code in VB.NET WinForms, C, C++, and many IEC 61131-3 PLC languages
• Experience with multi axis servo systems design, motion control systems, and robotic interfaces.
• Experience with sensor interfaces, IO, fieldbus, and related technology.
• Experience with integrating machine safety systems within software applications.
• Experience with software quality systems/processes.

Position Details

• Education: BS in Engineering (preferably Electrical or Computer) or Computer Science.
  • Relevant years of experience can be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Preferably 5 or more years of relevant controls and software programming experience.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status (green card).
• Travel will be less than 10%.
• Pay is commensurate with level of relevant experience.
