Job summary

Orion Solutions Group is seeking a Controls Engineer in the Ann Arbor area to design, program, and commission advanced automation systems. You will collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers on custom projects from concept through startup.

Required is 3+ years of controls experience, proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal, Allen Bradley PLCs, and Fanuc robot programming, and the ability to travel up to 50% to support equipment startups and customer sites.

  • Experience with EtherNet/IP, Profinet, or Modbus.
  • Strong troubleshooting of complex automation systems.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Siemens TIA Portal, Allen Bradley PLCs, and Fanuc robot programming.

Responsibilities

  • Design and program PLC-based control systems.
  • Program and integrate Fanuc industrial robots.
  • Develop HMIs and machine automation solutions.
  • Commission new equipment and support startups.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and upgrade automation systems.
  • Integrate PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, robotics, and networks.
  • Provide technical support to customers.
  • Create technical documentation and assist in testing.

Are you passionate about industrial automation, robotics, and building world-class machinery? We're partnering with an established OEM that designs and manufactures highly engineered production equipment used by leading manufacturers around the world. Due to continued growth, they're adding a Controls Engineer to their engineering team. This is an opportunity to work on challenging custom automation projects from concept through commissioning while collaborating with a talented group of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers.

What You'll Do
  • Design and program PLC-based control systems using Siemens TIA Portal and Allen Bradley Studio 5000 / RSLogix
  • Program and integrate Fanuc industrial robots
  • Develop HMIs and machine automation solutions
  • Commission new equipment and support machine startups
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and upgrade existing automation systems
  • Integrate PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, robotics, and industrial networks
  • Work directly with customers to provide technical support and automation solutions
  • Create technical documentation and participate in system validation and testing
What We're Looking For
  • 3+ years of Controls Engineering experience
  • Able to travel 50%
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, or Modbus
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex industrial automation systems
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for equipment startup and customer support
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills
  • Strong experience with:
    • Siemens TIA Portal
    • Allen Bradley PLCs
    • Fanuc Robot Programming
Nice to Have
  • SCADA experience
  • Motion control programming
  • Machine commissioning/start‑up experience
  • Siemens, Allen Bradley, or Fanuc certifications
  • Knowledge of NFPA 79, ISO 13849, or IEC 61508
