Job Title: Controls Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and support control systems for custom industrial equipment and automation projects. This role emphasizes PLC programming, system commissioning, and troubleshooting, collaborating closely with cross‑functional teams to deliver reliable and high‑performing systems.
- Travel: 30% – primarily to the Midwest, typically up to 2 weeks overnight at a time. Expenses covered + $60/day per diem.
Responsibilities
- Design, program, and modify PLC‑based control systems, primarily using Allen‑Bradley.
- Develop and support HMIs, electrical controls, and automation systems.
- Travel to support installation, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Troubleshoot system issues and implement real‑time improvements.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, technicians, and customers to ensure optimal system performance.
- Provide on‑site and remote support throughout the project lifecycle.
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of experience in controls engineering or automation.
- Proficiency in PLC programming – Allen Bradley.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics (AutoCAD, Eplan, SolidWorks).
- Experience working with customers in a fast‑paced environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with robotics, such as FANUC or ABB.
- Exposure to Siemens PLCs.
- Familiarity with hydraulics, machining, or metal removal processes.
- Experience with assembly, testing, or commissioning of custom equipment.
Work Environment
The position is hands‑on, supporting installs, startups, and customer sites.
Job Type & Location
Contract to Hire position based out of Traverse City, MI.
Pay and Benefits
Pay range: $38.00 – $45.00 per hour.
