Controls Design Manager
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Controls Design Manager to lead a team responsible for the design and execution of industrial control systems and control panel projects. This leadership role combines technical expertise with people management, overseeing project execution, workload planning, quality assurance, and continuous process improvement.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering leader with experience managing technical teams, improving engineering processes, and ensuring high-quality design deliverables while collaborating across multiple departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of Controls Designers and Senior Controls Designers.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing engineering culture.
- Plan departmental workload, staffing, priorities, and resource allocation to meet project schedules and business objectives.
- Ensure design deliverables meet project scope, quality standards, deadlines, and compliance requirements.
- Balance project execution with long-term team development by identifying training opportunities and skill gaps.
- Collaborate with project management, engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to ensure successful project execution.
- Maintain compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards, including NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A, and customer specifications.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, documentation requirements, and design best practices.
- Review and approve electrical drawings, design packages, redlines, and release documentation for accuracy and consistency.
- Oversee component selection, standardization efforts, approved substitutions, and maintenance of engineering libraries and databases.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to design quality, engineering workflows, documentation, and design tools.
- Serve as the technical escalation point for complex electrical controls design challenges involving AutoCAD, EPLAN, panel layouts, and documentation standards.
- Represent the Controls Design department in cross-functional meetings and customer interactions while aligning departmental priorities with organizational goals.
- Support additional engineering and operational initiatives as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or supervising technical engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of industrial control systems and electrical control panel design.
- Ability to effectively balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet standard employment screening requirements.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field with at least six years of relevant experience; or
- Associate degree in Engineering or a related technical field with at least eight years of relevant experience.
- Previous experience managing an engineering or controls design team.
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, EPLAN, and industrial electrical control standards.
- Experience with UL 508A compliance and interpretation.
- Experience leading engineering process improvements, standardization efforts, or continuous improvement initiatives.
