We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to lead custom industrial automation and control system projects from concept through commissioning. In this role, you will own the full electrical design lifecycle for high-impact automated machinery, robotic assembly systems, and custom control panels across diverse industries including aerospace, energy, defense, and manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with sales teams and customers to define technical specs, project scopes, cost estimates, and execution timelines.
- Design complete industrial control systems, power distribution schematics, and safety circuits in compliance with current industry standards.
- Create full layout drawings, wiring diagrams, and conduit schedules using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs and HMIs for custom machinery.
- Develop detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) and estimate labor requirements for engineering and assembly.
- Provide technical guidance to panel shop technicians during assembly and resolve build issues promptly.
- Perform in-house functional testing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and occasional customer site commissioning/support.
- Mentor junior engineering staff and help establish team design standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing industrial control systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency using AutoCAD Electrical for enclosure layouts and schematics.
- Deep experience designing, programming, and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLC and HMI platforms.
- Solid understanding of industrial safety components, circuit design, and standards.
- Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with additional PLC hardware platforms (Siemens, Modicon, Mitsubishi, WAGO, etc.).
- Knowledge of UL 508A panel design standards.
- Hands-on experience integrating industrial robotics (ABB or FANUC) and machine vision platforms (Cognex or Keyence).
- Experience with EPC project execution, writing control narratives, and managing RFIs/Change Orders.
