Job summary

The Barnstable Group seeks a Controller to support the CFO in managing accounting operations across three business units. You will lead the accounting team, prepare financial statements, and assist with audits and budgets.

Hybrid work is available from our Yarmouth Port, MA office. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, with CPA or MBA preferred, and at least three years of accounting experience, with GAAP and statutory knowledge, plus strong Excel and accounting

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; CPA or MBA is preferred.
• Minimum of three years of accounting experience required.
• GAAP and statutory accounting experience required; insurance industry experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership ability and a proactive approach; ability to mentor a team.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily accounting operations including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for three business units.
• Assist in budget preparation and financial forecasting.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and statutory accounting rules for insurance carriers.
• Support external audits and maintain internal controls.
• Lead and mentor a team of accountants; drive process improvements.
• Manage cash flow and short-term investments; maintain banking relationships.
• Involvement in special projects and data compilation for reinsurance placements.

This role requires leadership of the accounting team, preparing financial statements, and assisting with audit and budget processes.

• Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger and payroll
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for three business units.
• Assist in budget preparation and financial forecasting
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and Statutory accounting rules for insurance carriers
• Support external audits
• Implement and maintain internal controls
• Lead and mentor a team of accountants
• Involvement in special projects
• Manage cash flow and short-term investments
• Maintain banking relationships
• Compile policy and claim data for the reinsurance placement process

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
• Minimum of three years of related accounting experience required.
• GAAP and statutory accounting experience required; insurance industry experience strongly preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership ability and a positive, proactive approach.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
• Sound judgment, accuracy, follow-through, and the ability to manage competing priorities.

This position is based in our Yarmouth Port, MA office with the option to work a hybrid schedule.
