Job summary

OWL Services is seeking an experienced Controller based in Fort Worth, TX, to lead our construction accounting function and drive accurate financial reporting for complex projects.

You will own Percentage of Completion revenue recognition, WIP reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management while guiding a team of A/P, A/R, and payroll professionals to ensure compliance and operational excellence across the company.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Strong experience in construction accounting and PoC revenue recognition.
  • Proficient in Excel and construction ERP systems.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee key accounting functions with focus on construction accounting and WIP.
  • Lead month-end close and prepare financial statements.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and 13-week cash flow.
  • Ensure compliance with tax, insurance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations and project managers to improve profitability.
  • Supervise AP/AR/Payroll staff and develop the accounting team.
  • Monitor budgets, cost tracking, and variance analysis.
  • Provide financial insight to support business decisions.

The Role:

OWL Services is seeking an experienced Controller with a strong background in construction accounting. This position will be based out of our Fort Worth, TX office. The Controller will oversee key accounting functions, with a strong focus on construction accounting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, financial reporting, forecasting, cash flow management, and team leadership.

Responsibilities:
Revenue Recognition
  • Apply the Percentage of Completion method to accurately recognize revenue.
  • Calculate earned revenue based on actual costs incurred compared to total estimated project costs.
Work-in-Progress (WIP) Reporting
  • Prepare monthly WIP reports for all active projects.
  • Analyze under-billings and over-billings and identify potential cash flow risks.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of project costs for WIP reporting.
Cost Tracking
  • Monitor project budgets, including actual labor and material expenses.
  • Identify cost overruns and variances early and communicate findings to project managers.
  • Oversee the tracking of labor, materials, and overhead to ensure accurate project reporting.
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Update Estimates at Completion (EAC) for ongoing projects.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets.
  • Partner with project managers to develop realistic project budgets.
  • Review project performance and variance reports and provide recommendations as needed.
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
  • Lead the month-end close process.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare monthly income statements, balance sheets, and project-specific financial analyses.
  • Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with company policies.
Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Maintain strong financial controls and accounting procedures across the company.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations and company accounting policies.
  • Manage local, state, and federal tax compliance, insurance requirements, and other regulatory requirements.
Cash Flow Management
  • Monitor cash flow requirements for current and upcoming projects.
  • Prepare and maintain 13-week cash flow and liquidity forecasts.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with operations and project managers to review project performance and financial results.
  • Provide financial insight and recommendations to support business decisions.
  • Collaborate with leadership to improve financial processes and project profitability.
Team Leadership
  • Supervise and provide direction to Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll staff.
  • Support the development and growth of the accounting team.
  • Establish clear expectations and promote accountability across the accounting function.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Strong experience in construction accounting, including Percentage of Completion revenue recognition and WIP reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with construction ERP and accounting software, such as Sage.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
