Controller

Location: Tomball, TX

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm

Salary: $115k - $140k per year (based on experience)

Position Overview

The Controller will play a steady, detail-focused role in building a best-in-class accounting department. Reporting directly to executive leadership, this position is well-suited for someone who values structure, accuracy, and consistent processes, and who is ready to grow into the CFO role as the company expands.

This role will be hands‑on: managing core accounting functions, establishing reliable procedures, and ensuring accuracy at every step. It also offers the opportunity to improve processes and develop systems that create long-term stability for the business.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting
  • Carry out accounting functions with precision: A/P, A/R, payroll oversight, job costing, reconciliations, and month‑end close.
  • Establish clear month‑end close procedures to achieve a consistent 5‑day close timeline.
  • Prepare and deliver clean, audit‑ready financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow).
  • Support leadership with reliable forecasting and cash‑flow tracking.
Construction Accounting
  • Maintain accurate job cost records and implement a dashboard for real‑time tracking.
  • Ensure commitments, change orders, and cost coding are carefully managed.
  • Support preparation of Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) reports and monthly project projections.
  • Oversee billing processes (AIA, subcontractor invoicing, retainage, lien waivers).
Process Improvement & Team Development
  • Build and support a capable AP/AR team that can confidently manage day‑to‑day tasks.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and strengthen internal controls.
  • Contribute to dashboards and reporting tools that improve clarity for leadership.
  • Provide dependable support to executive leadership while gaining the experience to grow into the Controller role.
  • Model the company's values of integrity, care, and accountability in daily work.
  • Partner with leadership to align financial processes with long‑term company goals.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction industry experience required (job costing, WIP reporting).
  • Proficiency in construction accounting software (Deltek ComputerEase strongly preferred).
  • Detail‑oriented with a consistent, methodical approach to work.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvements and streamline workflows.
  • Strong communication skills, integrity, and accountability.
  • Desire and capacity to grow into the Controller role as the company continues to scale.
