Must have experience working for Series Backed companies and really want Controllers who have experience in the dev tool, dev platform space.
About the opportunity
We are a venture-backed developer platform that operates a remote-first team, and we run lean on purpose.
We are hiring our first dedicated Controller. Today, accounting is handled by our CFO with help from an outside contractor. You will take ownership of day-to-day accounting operations so our CFO can focus on strategy, fundraising, and planning. This is a hands-on, individual contributor role reporting directly to the CFO, with real influence over how our finance function is built as we scale.
What you'll do
- Own the monthly close end to end, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and balance sheet reconciliations, and drive toward a faster, repeatable close.
- Maintain the general ledger in QuickBooks and keep the chart of accounts clean as the business grows.
- Manage spend, AP, and expense workflows in Ramp, including coding, approvals, vendor management, and card program oversight.
- Own revenue accounting and AR for a usage-based business, including deferred revenue and reconciliation between billing data and the GL.
- Produce accurate monthly financial statements and budget-versus-actual reporting for the CFO and leadership.
- Support board reporting, fundraising diligence, and investor requests with clean, timely numbers.
- Prepare for and manage the annual financial audit, and coordinate with outside CPAs on federal, state, and sales tax filings and 1099s.
- Account for payroll, benefits, and equity across a fully remote, multi-state team.
- Design and document internal controls and accounting policies that fit a company our size and scale with us.
- Partner with the CFO and contractor on a smooth handoff of current processes, and help evaluate when to move beyond QuickBooks.
What you bring
- A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience as a Controller, or a senior Assistant Controller ready to own the function, with a proven track record running the close independently.
- Experience at a venture-backed startup, ideally Series A through C, where you built or rebuilt accounting processes rather than inherited them.
- Comfort wearing many hats, from booking entries and reconciling accounts to answering audit requests and improving systems, all without a team beneath you.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and a modern spend platform such as Ramp, Brex, or similar.
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and revenue recognition (ASC 606).
- Sound judgment, high ownership, and clear written communication suited to a remote, async team.
Nice to have
- Experience in developer tools, cloud infrastructure, or B2B SaaS.
- Accounting for usage-based or consumption billing, and reconciling billing systems such as Stripe to the GL.
- CPA license, or a public accounting background with startup or technology clients.
- First-hand experience leading a company through its first financial audit.
- Experience scoping or implementing an ERP migration (for example, QuickBooks to NetSuite).
