The successful Senior Controller candidate will lead like an owner, not a caretaker. This is not a maintain the-status-quo role — it's a build-and-scale role.
As Senior Controller, you will own the financial engine behind a hyper-growth organization, setting the standard for speed, accuracy, and accountability across every close, every audit, and every dollar that moves through the business.
Responsibilities
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting cycle end-to-end — reviewing, analyzing, and correcting to guarantee accuracy the first time, not after the fact.
- Set the standard for whether accounting is run on a cash or accrual basis, and drive the roadmap to full GAAP compliance as the business scales.
- Deliver board- and executive-ready reporting that turns financial data into a growth narrative, not just a compliance exercise.
Revenue & Audit Compliance
- Partner cross-functionally to ensure revenue recognition is accurate, timely, and defensible under scrutiny.
- Design audit procedures around how the business actually operates, proactively identifying risk before it becomes a finding.
- Own the external audit relationship and drive it to a clean result — no surprises, no scrambling.
Tax & Regulatory Expertise
- Serve as the internal authority on tax compliance, directing preparation and filing of corporate returns with precision.
- Anticipate regulatory exposure and build controls that keep the company ahead of it, not reacting
Transaction Integrity & Reconciliation
- Own reconciliation of related-party transactions, holding the line on accounting standards without exception.
- Root-cause discrepancies in the financials and drive the fix, not just flag the problem.
- Oversee bank reconciliation across all company accounts with zero tolerance for unexplained variance.
Month-End & Annual Close
- Lead a fast, clean close — entries, reconciliations, and analysis delivered with speed and precision every cycle.
- Translate financial results into a clear, decision-ready summary of company performance each month.
Revenue Collections & Billing Oversight
- Own billing schedules, chargebacks, and refunds, ensuring revenue is recorded and collected accurately and on time.
- Drive collections performance across payment platforms including Stripe, Shopify, and
- Ensure refunds and chargebacks are properly adjusted in NetSuite and Invoiced.com to close
- Partner with FP&A on commission reporting, catching and correcting errors in ecommerce commission structures before they compound.
- Own credit card reconciliation completeness and accuracy across the business.
- Recruit, coach, and develop a high-performance accounting team — building bench strength, not just headcount.
- Drive continuous process improvement, replacing manual work with scalable systems as the company grows 10X.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including proven success as a Controller or Senior Controller.
- Track record leading finance functions inside a hyper-growth or private-equity-backed environment — building the plane while flying it.
- Deep command of GAAP and applicable financial regulations, with hands-on experience transitioning a company from cash to accrual accounting.
- Minimum 3 years of revenue recognition experience; strong grasp of audit methodology, risk management, and tax regulation.
- Experience with related-party transactions and multi-entity consolidations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead budgeting, reporting, and financial close cycles at scale.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets (complex formulas, modeling) and NetSuite or comparable ERP systems.
- Proven people leadership — experience hiring, coaching, and growing an accounting team.
- Project management skill and the presence to run cross-functional meetings and drive alignment.
- A bias for ownership: someone who builds trust and commands respect quickly, treats problems as theirs to solve, and operates with urgency in ambiguity.
