Job description

People415 is hiring on behalf of one of our clients confidentially. They are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead and own the company’s accounting, tax, financial close, and control functions across our U.S. and Australian entities.

Reporting to the Head of Finance & Strategy, the Controller will be accountable for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of our financial reporting and accounting operations. This role will manage our external U.S. and Australian accounting and tax partners, oversee multi-entity consolidation and compliance, and establish scalable accounting processes and controls as the company grows.

The Controller will also lead the transition from QuickBooks to a new ERP platform and partner with the broader business on budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

As our first dedicated accounting hire, you'll build the accounting function from the ground up and, over time, potentially develop and lead a high-performing accounting team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own all aspects of the accounting function, including the integrity of the general ledger and the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial reporting across U.S. and Australian entities.
  • Lead the end-to-end monthly close process, including account reconciliations, consolidations, intercompany activity, and foreign currency translation.
  • Oversee technical accounting matters across both SaaS and physical fulfillment business models, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable accounting standards.
  • Maintain audit-ready financial records and lead external audits, financial reviews, due diligence, and other financial reporting processes.
  • Manage relationships, deliverables, quality, and deadlines for external U.S. and Australian accounting partners.
  • Develop and maintain scalable accounting policies, close procedures, reconciliations, approval controls, and financial documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen processes, improve reporting accuracy, and increase operational efficiency.
Tax, Compliance & Equity Administration
  • Manage external accounting and tax partners to ensure timely and accurate U.S. and Australian tax filings.
  • Oversee sales tax nexus requirements, related registrations and filings, and ongoing compliance.
  • Manage annual 1099 reporting and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate equity and capitalization records using Carta.
  • Support equity grants, exercises, reporting, reconciliations, and stakeholder requests in partnership with legal counsel and external advisors.
  • Support transfer pricing and other cross-border accounting and tax matters as needed.
  • Evaluate ERP solutions and lead the company's migration from QuickBooks to a scalable platform, or another appropriate solution.
  • Own the ERP implementation process, including system selection, data migration, process design, testing, controls, and implementation.
  • Optimize integrations between the ERP and key financial systems, including Ramp, Stripe, and Carta.
  • Build scalable, efficient financial workflows that support the company's continued growth.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage automation and AI to improve accounting and finance operations.
  • Complete the current equity platform transition to Carta and maintain clean equity records
FP&A & Business Partnership
  • Support the annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Perform financial modeling, variance analysis, and ad hoc financial analysis to support business decisions.
  • Partner with the Head of Finance & Strategy to pressure-test financial assumptions and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial models and reporting.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business leaders to identify opportunities for financial and operational improvement.
  • Translate financial information into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders across the organization.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including significant ownership of a controllership or equivalent accounting function.
  • Experience supporting businesses with physical operations and multi-entity accounting structures.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and technical accounting principles.
  • Experience accounting for multiple revenue and operating models, including subscription, usage-based, and physical product or fulfillment operations.
  • Demonstrated experience consolidating international entities under a U.S. parent company, including foreign currency translation.
  • Experience leading an ERP evaluation, selection, and implementation or migration.
  • Experience owning or leading an annual financial statement audit.
  • Experience managing outsourced accounting, audit, and/or tax partners.
  • Hands-on experience with sales tax nexus and 1099 compliance.
  • Strong financial analysis skills with the ability to independently validate assumptions, identify discrepancies, and pressure-test financial information.
  • Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks and strong overall financial systems aptitude.
  • Strong FP&A capabilities, including financial modeling, forecasting, and ownership of budgeting processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Australian accounting and/or tax experience.
  • Experience working in a business with physical operations, fulfillment, warehousing, logistics, or supply chain complexity.
  • Experience with Rillet, Campfire, Carta, Ramp, and/or Stripe.
  • Experience with transfer pricing and cross-border accounting matters.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation within accounting, FP&A, or broader finance operations.
Leadership & Working Style

The successful candidate will be a highly accountable, hands‑on finance leader who is comfortable operating at both the strategic and transactional levels. They will bring:

  • A high degree of ownership, accountability, and self-direction.
  • A builder mindset and enthusiasm for creating scalable processes, systems, and teams.
  • Strong judgment and attention to detail, paired with an understanding of the broader business.
  • The willingness to work directly within transaction‑level details while maintaining a strategic view of accounting operations and best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex financial matters clearly.
  • A collaborative, cross‑functional approach to leadership rather than operating within a finance silo.
  • The ability to thrive in a growing environment where processes and infrastructure are continuing to evolve.
  • The capability and interest to build and lead an internal accounting team as the organization grows.
Benefits include:
