Job description

Translucent Services—a provider of data storage implementations for leading OEMs—is looking for a Corporate Controller ready to own the numbers, shape operations, and grow with us into broader finance leadership.

You will own the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of our financial reporting and controls. With our outsourced accounting partner handling transactional AP/AR and bookkeeping, you will focus on directing their output, owning the month-end close in Sage, producing GAAP financial statements, managing cash, and coordinating payroll, multi-state tax, and external accounting.

Working directly with the CEO and COO, you’ll deliver decision-ready reporting (practice-level P&L, job/engineer profitability) and help shape pricing, investment, and growth decisions. Your first year is about transitioning from interim coverage, building a repeatable finance operating model, and earning leadership trust. As we scale, this role is positioned to expand into CFO-level responsibilities like capital strategy and long-range planning.

WHY JOIN TRANSLUCENT
  • Real ownership: Own the finance function end-to-end, not just one slice of the close.
  • Direct leadership access: Work daily with the CEO and COO to shape pricing, hiring, and growth.
  • Collaborative culture: Partner transparently across operations, field teams, and practice leaders.
  • Build, don't just maintain: Design controls, reporting, and systems integrations for a scaling company.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close; maintain a documented calendar and drive to a defined target.
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements and a monthly management reporting package (with budget-vs-actual) for the CEO/COO.
  • Manage outsourced accounting partner: define SLAs; approve AP runs, AR aging, journal entries, and reconciliations; resolve issues.
  • Design practical internal controls for an outsourced model (segregation of duties, approval matrices, system access).
  • Review all balance sheet reconciliations monthly and clear aged items.
  • Oversee revenue/billing accuracy for field services; ensure completed jobs and work orders are invoiced to OEM clients accurately and on time; track WIP.
  • Manage cash: maintain 13-week forecast, drive AR collections, schedule AP, and manage banking relationships/covenants.
  • Partner with HR to process payroll; own payroll accounting, multi-state tax, and liability reconciliations.
  • Own 1099/subcontractor tax compliance.
  • Coordinate with external CPA on federal/state income and sales/use tax filings; prepare audit support.
  • Lead annual budget and monthly forecasting with the COO; maintain profitability reporting and support pricing models.
  • Oversee T&E accounting policy compliance.
  • Support Federal Darksite contract financial compliance (e.g., labor-hour substantiation, cost tracking).
  • Own Sage administration; document workflows and implement integrations with operational systems.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
  • Own month-end close independently within 60 days; achieve 15-day close by day 90.
  • Deliver monthly management reporting to the CEO/COO beginning by day 90.
  • Establish outsourced partner SLAs and review cadence within 60 days.
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly (no unexplained items over 60 days).
  • Invoice completed jobs within 7 days; track DSO and AR aging targets.
  • Complete all tax/compliance filings on time with zero penalties; clean year-end close.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years progressive accounting, including 3+ as a Controller/Assistant Controller (small-to-mid-sized services company preferred).
  • Expert in GAAP, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Demonstrated success managing an outsourced accounting provider.
  • Experience with services revenue: project/T&M billing, WIP, and job costing.
  • Multi-state payroll, sales/use tax, and 1099 compliance knowledge.
  • Advanced Excel; adept at pulling/reconciling data from operational systems.
  • Must meet eligibility for Federal Darksite contracts (e.g., U.S. Citizenship or specific security clearances).
PREFERRED
  • Active CPA strongly preferred (CMA considered).
  • Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct.
  • Federal contracting or DCAA compliance experience.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
  • Accountability: Ultimate owner of financial accuracy, holding internal teams and external vendors to high standards.
  • Hands-On & Strategic: Able to fix a journal entry while connecting financial results to broader business strategy.
  • Business Partnership: Translates complex financials into actionable insight for non-finance leaders.
  • Discretion: Handles confidential company data with high integrity.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to operate a computer, communicate effectively, and perform prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Pay range is $145,000–$200,000/year (based on experience/location) plus a discretionary annual bonus.

  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, company-paid Life/AD&D/STD/LTD, PTO, sick leave, and a 401(k).
  • Coverage begins on the date of hire.
