Job summary

NEC Operating in Texas is hiring an in-house Controller to own the accounting function across multiple entities. This hands-on role requires building scalable processes, leading a staff accountant, and delivering accurate financial reporting for leadership.

You will manage JIB, revenue distribution, COPAS and joint venture accounting under JOA and COPAS, supervise close cycles, and coordinate with our outside CPA and tax advisors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
• CPA strongly preferred.
• 7+ years of accounting experience, including 3+ in oil and gas, preferably at an operator.

Responsibilities

• Review historical bank activity, ledgers and records for each entity; reconcile all bank accounts.
• Prepare current and historical balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements at the entity and consolidated level.
• Maintain partner capital accounts, track contributions, distributions, allocations and ownership changes; support investors’ tax-basis records.
• Deliver tax-ready books and schedules to outside CPA; assist with K-1 and 1099 reporting.
• Oversee JIB, revenue distribution, AFE tracking and joint-venture accounting under JOA and COPAS.
• Lead monthly close, account reconciliations, chart of accounts, controls and documentation standards.
• Supervise and develop a staff accountant; provide cash-flow reporting and financial insights to leadership.

NEC Operating is an independent Texas oil and gas company. We build and operate saltwater disposal (SWD) infrastructure and run drilling programs, with operations in Texas and several other states. Our business spans multiple operating entities, joint ventures and investor partnerships. We are expanding our SWD footprint and building a finance function to match.

The role

We’re hiring an in-house Controller to own the accounting function across every entity, from the ground up. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys bringing order to complex, multi-entity books, building processes that last, and becoming the trusted financial voice for leadership. You’ll report directly to the President, lead a staff accountant, and work alongside our outside CPA and tax advisors.

What you’ll do

• Review historical bank activity, ledgers and supporting records for each entity. Reconcile every bank account. Find and correct missing, duplicate or misclassified transactions.
• Prepare accurate current and historical balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements at the entity level, and combined where appropriate.
• Maintain partner capital accounts, track contributions, distributions, allocations and ownership changes, and support investors’ tax-basis records.
• Deliver tax-ready books and schedules to our outside CPA. Help evaluate whether prior filings need correction, and support accurate, on-time K-1 and 1099 reporting.
• JIB, revenue distribution, AFE tracking and joint-venture accounting under JOA and COPAS standards.
• Monthly close, account reconciliations, a chart of accounts, controls and documentation standards.
• Supervise and develop a staff accountant. Provide cash-flow reporting and financial insight to leadership.

What we’re looking for

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. CPA strongly preferred.
• 7+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 in oil and gas, ideally at an operator.
• Has personally prepared financial statements for multiple entities.
• Strong partnership accounting: capital accounts, allocations, and the difference between book capital and tax basis.
• Hands-on experience with JIB, revenue accounting, COPAS and joint-venture accounting.
• Experience with oil and gas accounting software. WolfePak - PetroFly.
• Comfortable in a small, fast-moving company: you roll up your sleeves, then follow the system so the problem doesn’t come back.

Must have

• SWD or water midstream accounting
• Knowledge of IDC, TDC and depletion
• Investor or limited partner reporting experience
• Experience managing a transition between accounting systems
