Job summary

The Apartment Gallery seeks an experienced Controller to lead the accounting department across a growing multifamily portfolio. Reporting to the Director of Asset Management, this role oversees financial close, internal controls, tax coordination, and banking relationships while supervising a team of Senior Accountants, Staff Accountants, and AP Clerks.

We require a bachelor’s degree in accounting (CPA preferred), 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with supervisory responsibilities,

Qualifications

  • 7+ years progressive accounting experience including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting theory and internal control practices.
  • Experience managing monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing and reporting processes.
  • Advanced Excel and accounting software proficiency (Yardi experience preferred).
  • Strong analytical, communication, leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, and develop Senior Accountants, Staff Accountants and Accounts Payable Clerks.
  • Provide leadership and operational oversight of the Accounting Department, including Accounts Payable, General Ledger, Treasury Management, and related functions.
  • Drive continuous improvement by leveraging technology and best practices to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the accounting function.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness and integrity of financial books and records.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce accounting policies, processes and procedures balancing efficiency with sound internal controls.
  • Direct and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Coordinate the preparation of federal, state, and local business entity tax returns with external accounting firm.
  • Partner with Asset Management, Property Management, and leadership team members to identify significant variances, trends, and issues.
  • Support due diligence and onboarding for acquisitions, dispositions or refinancing when needed.
  • Coordinate the accounting aspects of the annual budgeting process for property operating budgets.
  • Maintain banking relationships with various financial institutions.
  • Prepare lender, investor, and other external financial reporting as needed.
  • Oversee sales/use tax, personal property tax, and other required filings.
  • Serve as backup for payroll processing to ensure business continuity.

We are looking for a bachelor's degree in accounting (CPA preferred), 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with supervisory responsibility, and advanced Excel skills (Yardi a plus). Experience managing accounting across multiple property entities, banks and bank accounts is strongly preferred.
