Job summary

CFS in Providence, RI is seeking a strategic Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations for a mission-driven nonprofit. You will manage the general ledger, monthly close, and reporting to leadership and funders, while partnering with program teams to strengthen financial systems and controls.

This senior role demands hands-on leadership, GAAP compliance, audits and Form 990 readiness, and mentoring of finance staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (MBA/CPA preferred).
• Strong nonprofit accounting and compliance experience.
• Proven ability to lead close processes and manage a finance team.
• Clear communicator with a hands-on, practical leadership style.

Responsibilities

• Lead all accounting and financial operations, including the general ledger and monthly/year-end close.
• Prepare and present accurate financial reports for leadership, funders, and stakeholders.
• Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and program-level financial planning.
• Oversee compliance with GAAP and federal/state regulations, including audits and Form 990.
• Manage, mentor, and develop finance staff while improving processes and controls.
