We are seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of our growing professional services organization. The Controller will oversee all accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting support, internal controls, cash management, and compliance activities while providing leadership to the accounting team. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information and partnering with executive leadership to support business growth and operational excellence.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting expertise, experience within a professional services environment, and a proven ability to improve processes and drive efficiencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process.
- Prepare and review timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Analyze financial results and provide recommendations to executive leadership.
- Develop and maintain financial reporting packages, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Support forecasting, annual budgeting, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Monitor firm profitability, project margins, and utilization metrics.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management functions.
- Manage client billing processes, including time and expense tracking, invoicing, collections, and revenue analysis.
- Review account reconciliations and oversee balance sheet integrity.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements.
- Coordinate annual audits and act as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and professional standards.
- Maintain accounting policies and procedures documentation.
Cash Flow & Treasury Management
- Oversee cash forecasting and liquidity management.
- Manage banking relationships and treasury functions.
- Monitor accounts receivable aging and collection activities.
- Analyze working capital and recommend improvements.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and implement best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and automation projects.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, project management, HR, and executive leadership.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- 3+ years of leadership or management experience.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Advanced proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Experience within a professional services organization.
- Knowledge of project-based accounting, revenue recognition, and WIP reporting.
- Experience supporting audits and tax compliance activities.
- Familiarity with Power BI or other financial reporting tools.
