American Overhead Door & Dock is a leading installer and service provider of commercial overhead doors, loading dock equipment, and facility safety systems across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. The company operates four branches in Levittown PA, Allentown PA, Harrisburg PA, and Maryland, and is backed by Guardian Capital Partners. AOHDD has built its reputation on long-term customer relationships, responsive service, and safe, high-quality installation work
Position Summary
AOHDD is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead the accounting function. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this role owns the monthly close, revenue recognition on installation contracts, job cost accounting, the financial statements, and the internal control environment behind them.
The company recently implemented NetSuite and is investing in its finance function, including new processes, new systems capability, and a growing team. The Controller will play a central role in shaping how the department operates and will have significant latitude to build.
This is a hands-on role. The Controller works in NetSuite daily, investigating transactions, tracing job cost and revenue activity, and resolving issues directly in the system. Candidates who enjoy digging into the details and getting the data right will do well here.
This is a visible leadership role with regular exposure to the CEO, the board, and the company’s private equity sponsor.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and deliver accurate, timely financial statements.
- Prepare the monthly financial reporting package, including variance analysis and commentary for executive leadership and the sponsor.
- Direct revenue recognition for installation contracts, including percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP schedules, and revenue accruals.
- Maintain the estimate-to-complete process and partner with Operations to ensure cost-to-complete estimates are current and supportable.
- Analyze job profitability, over- and under-billings, retainage, and change orders.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, approval matrices, and segregation of duties across the close, AR, AP, and payroll cycles.
- Own the annual audit relationship and manage the engagement from planning through issuance.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors on filings and support sales, use, and payroll tax compliance.
- Oversee accounts receivable, including billing accuracy, aging, collections, allowance for doubtful accounts, and write-off recommendations.
- Oversee accounts payable, including vendor bill and purchase order discipline, payment runs, and corporate credit card accounting.
- Support annual budgeting, periodic forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Serve as the accounting owner of NetSuite. Work directly in the system to research transactions, trace job cost and revenue activity, resolve data issues, and correct errors at the source rather than in spreadsheets.
- Build and maintain saved searches, reports, and reconciliations that allow the accounting team to answer questions inside NetSuite, and identify opportunities to automate manual processes.
- Partner with IT and outside consultants on NetSuite configuration, workflows, and reporting enhancements.
- Manage, develop, and mentor the accounting team across general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including time as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager. Strong candidates with 5+ years are encouraged to apply.
- Hands‑on experience with percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP reporting, and job costing, preferably within construction, specialty trade contracting, mechanical or electrical contracting, or field services.
- Demonstrated ownership of a financial statement audit.
- Experience designing accounting policy and internal controls.
- Experience managing and developing direct reports.
- Hands‑on ERP experience with the ability to investigate and resolve issues directly in the system, including building searches and reports without relying on IT. Advanced Excel.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with operations and field leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands‑on NetSuite experience, particularly in a recently implemented environment.
- Private equity‑backed or multi‑location environment.
- Public accounting background, particularly in a construction practice.
- Base salary of $160,000.
- Annual performance‑based bonus.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) with company match.
- Generous paid time off and paid holidays.
Why Consider This Opportunity
- Own the accounting function outright rather than a segment of a larger department.
- Direct reporting line to the CFO, with visibility to the CEO, the board, and the private equity sponsor.
- Clear mandate and the latitude to shape processes, systems, and team structure.
- Recently implemented NetSuite and active investment in the finance function, with real ownership of how the system is used.
- Stable, growing business with four branches and an established regional customer base.
