The company is a specialty contractor providing containment and environmental solutions for customers across the oil & gas, industrial, and environmental markets. Our work includes geosynthetic liner systems and related containment construction, water treatment services, equipment and material rentals, and other project-based field services. We operate across multiple divisions and markets, supporting customers on technically demanding projects where safety, quality, execution, and responsiveness are critical.
The company is seeking a hands-on, high-integrity Financial Controller to lead the company’s day-to-day accounting and financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for strengthening the accounting function, improving reporting and job-cost visibility, maintaining disciplined controls, and building scalable processes that support continued growth. This role will be a key partner to the CFO, CEO, operations, and sales leadership and requires someone who can own the details of the accounting function while also improving the quality and speed of financial information used to run the business. A major near-term priority will be helping evaluate, select, and implement a new ERP/business management platform soon after joining the company, with a focus on integrating accounting, job costing, purchasing, project controls, and operational reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process with accurate and timely financial statements and reporting packets
- Prepare and present P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and division-level reporting
- Develop job-costing and project profitability reporting across business lines including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, freight, and other direct costs, and ensure costs are coded accurately and timely to each project
- Own sales tax compliance across applicable states and jurisdictions, including taxability reviews, exemption certificates, filings, reconciliations, and coordination with outside tax advisors as needed
- Oversee company credit card activity, including transaction coding, receipt/documentation compliance, monthly reconciliations, employee follow-up, and proper job-cost allocation
- Perform and review key balance sheet and general ledger reconciliations and ensure reconciling items are resolved promptly
- Manage fixed assets and depreciation schedules
- Build and maintain dashboards and KPIs for leadership
- Ensure GAAP compliance and consistent accounting practices
Cash Flow & Working Capital Management
- Create and manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning
- Manage AR/AP personnel to optimize processes to improve cash conversion cycle
- Partner with operations to improve working capital discipline
- Manage and oversee all inventory management, monthly counts and needed adjustments
Leadership & Systems
- Lead and develop the accounting team - Oversee billing, collections, and revenue recognition
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of a new ERP/business management platform soon after joining the company
- Own data cleanup, migration, testing, controls, and finance-side adoption during implementation
- Partner with operations and other functional leaders to ensure the new system supports field and project workflows, not just accounting
- Serve as a financial thought partner to the CFO, President, and leadership team
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
- Own the annual budgeting and quarterly reforecasting process across all divisions
- New divisions and service lines
- Partner with operations and sales to:
- Model crew productivity and utilization
- Analyze pricing, margin, and mix by service line
- Deliver variance analysis vs. budget and forecast with clear insights and recommended actions
- Support strategic planning sessions with data-driven insights and scenario modeling
- Help leadership answer "what if" questions in real time
Controls, Compliance & Risk
- Establish and enforce internal controls and financial policies
- Manage external audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred not required)
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
- Experience in construction, industrial services, oil & gas, or project-based businesses strongly preferred
- Deep knowledge of job costing, WIP, and project accounting
- Hands-on experience with sales tax compliance, credit card transaction controls and reconciliations, and multi-account balance sheet reconciliations
- Experience participating in or leading an ERP/accounting system implementation strongly preferred
- Strong leadership and communication skills
