Overview of the Role

A well-established, design-focused architecture firm in NYC is seeking a Controller to lead its financial operations.

This role will oversee all aspects of accounting and financial management, ensuring accurate reporting, strong financial controls, and strategic insight to support the firm’s continued growth.

You’ll partner closely with leadership and project teams, managing both corporate and project-based financials, while driving process improvements and financial planning initiatives.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger and financial systems management
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and deliver financial reports to leadership and external stakeholders
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and financial forecasting
  • Support firm-wide financial planning, budgeting, and strategic analysis
  • Oversee project-based accounting, including billing, revenue tracking, and cost management
  • Review unbilled labor, consultant costs, and reimbursable expenses
  • Manage client invoicing cycles in line with project progress and contracts
  • Track consultant invoices and ensure compliance with contractual agreements
  • Maintain oversight of project contracts and financial performance
Payroll & Benefits Administration
  • Oversee payroll processing and partner distributions
  • Ensure payroll tax compliance and accurate record-keeping
  • Manage employee compensation tracking (bonuses, accruals, salary changes)
  • Administer employee benefits including healthcare and retirement plans
Accounts Payable & Compliance
  • Oversee accounts payable and vendor management processes
  • Ensure all expenses and consultant invoices are properly recorded and approved
  • Maintain compliance with tax filings, 1099s, and insurance requirements
  • Coordinate with external CPA on annual tax filings
Systems & Process Improvement
  • Manage and optimize accounting systems, including Deltek Vantagepoint
  • Oversee financial reporting requirements for government/agency projects
  • Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen controls and efficiency
Ideal Background
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA or MBA preferred
  • 5–7+ years of accounting experience, ideally within architecture, engineering, or construction
  • Strong understanding of project-based accounting and professional services billing
  • Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint required
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Experience with government or agency reporting preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Salary range: $125,000 – $135,000
