Job description

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Controller to join an award-winning design firm in Manhattan. In this role, you will be responsible for day-to-day accounting operations, payroll processes, and providing financial updates to leadership.

Responsibilities include:

• Manage accounts payable and receivable functions, including monthly project billing and daily collections.
• Manage payroll on a semi-monthly and bi-weekly basis
• Prepare financial statements and manage the monthly/annual close process
• Perform accurate and timely reconciliations of bank and general ledger accounts
• Ensure adherence to all financial and tax reporting/payment requirements, including state and federal tax filings
• Complete annual 1099 process, ensuring accurate and timely reporting for independent contractors.
• Collaborate with project leadership to review contract terms, payment schedules, and client billing
• Maintain safeguards for revenue, costs, and project and organizational budgets, ensuring alignment with actual expenditures
• Work with leadership to establish financial benchmarks, budgets, project monitoring, and reporting standards
• Develop and enforce internal controls to protect company assets and streamline policies, procedures, and workflows
• Support short- and long-term operational strategies
• Partner with leadership on budget projections, maintaining budget goals through proper scheduling, analysis, and corrective actions
• Provide financial updates to leadership by evaluating and reporting key data points
• Prepare reports and supporting documentation for external accountants
• Guide financial decisions by applying company policies to current economic conditions
• Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls and guidelines

Person Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or similar – preferred, but not essential
• 5+ years’ demonstrable experience in a financial control, accounting
• Experience with accounting software – QuickBooks, Deltek and Microsoft Excel.
• Skilled in payroll, bank reconciliations, invoicing, AP/AR, etc.
