A well-established Queens-based property management company is seeking an experienced and hands‑on Controller to join their accounting leadership team. This position plays a key role in overseeing financial operations across a portfolio of affordable housing properties, with responsibilities spanning budgeting, month‑end close, audits, and strategic process improvements. The ideal candidate will bring strong affordable housing accounting expertise, exceptional analytical skills, and a collaborative leadership style.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee day‑to‑day accounting functions and month‑end close processes across multiple affordable housing properties.
- Coordinate with leasing and property managers to ensure accuracy in tenant ledgers, subsidy tracking, and split‑ledger reconciliations.
- Review and analyze general ledger activities, prepare journal entries, and complete bank reconciliations.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and management reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead and support budgeting and forecasting processes, ensuring accuracy and alignment with property and organizational goals.
- Prepare and review variance analyses, cash flow reports, and other key financial metrics.
- Support annual audits, tax filings, and compliance with applicable affordable housing regulatory requirements.
- Implement and maintain effective internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to ensure compliance and integrity of financial data.
- Partner cross‑functionally on strategic initiatives, including technology integration and process improvement related to revenue management and reporting.
- Proactively identify and resolve accounting issues to ensure transactions are properly recorded and financial reporting remains accurate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
- 7–10 years of accounting experience within the property management or real estate industry, with a strong focus on affordable housing programs.
- In‑depth understanding of HUD, LIHTC, and other affordable housing regulations.
- Proficiency in Yardi and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, prioritize, and execute in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment.
- Strong problem‑solving mindset with a commitment to accuracy, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
