Job summary

Orion Placement in Madison, WI is seeking a controller-level accounting leader for a 100% on-site role with a growing construction organization. You will oversee all accounting and financial operations, partner with executives, and guide budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years of controller experience in construction, strong Excel and Sage 300 CRE skills, and a CPA or advanced degree is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 2+ years of Controller-level accounting experience in construction or mechanical contracting.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing accounting teams.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with Sage 300 CRE is highly preferred.
  • CPA or Master's degree is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, leadership, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting and financial operations for a growing construction organization.

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide recommendations to improve profitability.
  • Manage all accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Partner with project managers to review job costing, labor analysis, and project profitability.
  • Perform cost analysis and variance reporting to identify opportunities for improved financial performance.
  • Support pricing strategies, forecasting, and long‑term business planning.
  • Coordinate annual audits and ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Manage insurance renewals, claims, audits, and related financial activities.
  • Develop, mentor, and lead the accounting team while fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to executive leadership.

Location

Note: To be considered, candidates must have at least 2+ years of Controller‑level accounting experience within the construction or mechanical contracting industry. Construction accounting experience is required.
