Job description

Alleato Group is a design-build general contractor and construction manager working from offices in Indianapolis and St. Petersburg. We are licensed in six states and deliver ground-up construction, expansions, conversions and tenant improvement for developers, owners, retailers, systems integrators and third-party logistics operators.

We are growing, and we are building the finance function that growth requires. This is a new position.

The opportunity

This is the company's first full-time senior finance hire. You would own the accounting function outright, reporting to the executive team and working directly with the CEO, COO and CDO.

It is a build role. You will set how this company closes its books, reports its projects and manages its cash, and you will own those decisions rather than inherit them. For the right person that is the appeal.

What you would own

The monthly close. A close that lands on a predictable date, ties out, and produces a package the executive team can act on.

Work in progress reporting. Percentage of completion accounting, the monthly WIP schedule, and the reconciliation of costs in excess of billings and billings in excess of costs to the general ledger, working with the project managers who own the job forecasts.

Job cost accounting. Cost coding discipline, committed cost tracking, change order accounting, and the monthly cost-to-complete cycle with the project teams.

Billing, receivables and retainage. Owner billings, lien waivers, collections, and retainage on both sides.

Payables and subcontractor accounting. Pay applications, compliance, subcontractor retainage, and payment timing that protects our relationships in the trades.

Cash. Weekly cash position, a rolling 13-week forecast, bank reconciliations, and borrowing base reporting.

Reporting. Monthly financial statements, the WIP schedule, backlog reporting and the KPI package for the executive team.

External relationships. Our CPA firm, our bank, and our surety as we build the bonding program.

Systems. Ownership of the accounting and job cost platform and its integration with Procore.

Internal controls. Segregation of duties, approval thresholds, and a control environment that stands up to a lender, a surety and an acquirer.

What we are looking for
Required
  • Five or more years in accounting leadership, with at least three in commercial construction
  • Hands-on percentage of completion accounting and monthly WIP schedule preparation. This is the core of the job and we will go deep on it in the interview
  • Demonstrated ownership of a monthly close, start to finish
  • Job cost accounting in a project-based business
  • Working knowledge of AIA billing, lien waivers and retainage on both sides
  • Strong Excel. You should be comfortable building and auditing a model, not only reading one
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
Preferred
  • CPA or CCIFP
  • Experience with Sage, Viewpoint, Acumatica or a comparable construction ERP, and with Procore
  • Experience supporting a surety relationship and a bonding program
  • Experience with a revolving credit facility and borrowing base reporting
  • Multi-state payroll, sales and use tax, and contractor licensing compliance
  • Experience in a company that grew quickly
  • Exposure to acquisition diligence, on either side of the table
How you work
  • You raise issues early, with the arithmetic behind them
  • You are comfortable giving an executive team a straight answer
  • You can work with project managers and superintendents on their own terms. Much of what you need lives with the field, and it does not arrive by email on its own
  • You are willing to do the work yourself while you build the team
Location

Indianapolis, IN or St. Petersburg, FL. A hybrid arrangement will be considered for the right candidate. Some travel between the two offices, and occasional project site visits.

What we offer

A highly competitive compensation package, health benefits, paid time off, and the opportunity to build a finance function rather than maintain one. Direct access to the executive team with no layers in between.
