Job summary

Synergy Search seeks a Controller in Ellicott City, MD to own the full accounting function, reporting to the CFO, and managing two Staff Accountants. This role leads the shift to a tighter monthly close and consolidates acquired entities onto one chart of accounts and ERP system.

You will oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close, drive M&A integrations, strengthen internal controls, and manage audits and taxes while partnering with leadership on budgeting and KPI reporting in a PE-backed,

Qualifications

• Hands on experience integrating the financials of acquired companies into a parent organization.
• Multi-entity consolidation experience.
• Proven record of building or overhauling a close process and shortening the close timeline.
• Measurable examples of processes you have improved, automated, or made scalable.
• Experience in a growth stage company in the $50M to $300M range.
• Strong technical accounting skills and staff development.
• Ability to work on site in the Mid Atlantic region.

Responsibilities

• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, reviewing financials for leadership and the PE sponsor.

The Company

Our client is a private equity-backed services company that has grown from roughly $30-40M to nearly $100M in revenue over the past two to three years through an active acquisition strategy, with more deals in the pipeline.

This is a stable, founder-and-PE-backed business with low turnover and a genuinely flexible, family-oriented culture.

The Role

Newly available Controller seat reporting to the CFO, owning the full accounting function and managing two Staff Accountants.

The company is moving from a flexible, informal close to a tighter, more disciplined monthly close, and this person will lead that transition while also integrating newly acquired businesses onto one chart of accounts and ERP system.

What You'll Own

• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, reviewing financials for leadership and the PE sponsor
• Company is regularly acquiring other organizations after recently partnering with a PE firm and this person will own M&A integrations
• Manage and develop two Staff Accountants
• Strengthen internal controls and close documentation
• Own the external audit and tax relationship end to end
• Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and variance reporting
• Consolidate financials across entities, including newly acquired businesses
• Oversee cash management, AP/AR escalations, and banking relationships
• Prepare board and sponsor-ready reporting packages and KPI dashboards

What You Must Bring

• Hands on experience integrating the financials of acquired companies into a parent organization
• Multi entity consolidation experience
• Proven record of building or overhauling a close process and shortening the close timeline
• Specific, measurable examples of processes you have improved, automated, or made scalable
• Experience in a growth stage company in the $50M to $300M range (this is not a fit for someone who has only worked in very large corporate environments)
• Strong technical accounting skills and experience leading and developing staff
• Ability to work on site in the Mid Atlantic region

Strongly Preferred

• Interest in growing into FP&A and strategic finance
• Experience in a private equity backed or acquisitive company (a plus, not a requirement)
• Big 4 or large public accounting professionals ready to move into industry are encouraged to apply

Compensation

• $160 to ~200k base
• Quarterly performance bonus
