Job summary

The Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church is seeking a Controller to supervise staff and all core accounting functions—AP, AR, and payroll—working with the Conference Treasurer to produce comprehensive financial statements and audit documentation. This is a primarily remote role based in the Denver, CO area.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in accounting, at least five years in a nonprofit or church Controller role, GAAP expertise, and experience with Financial Edge

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting is required.
  • Five years minimum experience as a Controller in nonprofit or church accounting.
  • CPA is preferred.
  • Demonstrated GAAP knowledge.
  • Experience with fund accounting and reporting requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting processes including AP, AR, and payroll.
  • Prepare financial statements and regulatory reports with the Treasurer.
  • Coordinate annual audit and assist with audit documentation.
  • Lead monthly close and reporting for the Conference.
  • Ensure timely reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and restricted funds.
  • Post public-facing financial reports to the website and distribute to stakeholders.

Job description

The Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church is seeking a Controller. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing staff and ensuring seamless operations in accounting functions that include, but are not limited to, accounts payable, receivable, and payroll. This role works closely with the Conference Treasurer to assist in preparing comprehensive financial statements, regulatory reports, and audit documentation. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of payroll regulations and consistently apply best accounting practices to support the Conference’s mission and uphold principles of responsible financial stewardship. This is a primarily remote position, based in Denver, CO area.

The Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church serves the people of Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and part of Idaho, guided by values of accountability, inclusivity, collaboration, and transparency.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Treasurer to evaluate, modify and/or establish accounting processes and practices to ensure financial accountability and transparency.
  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Responsible Stewardship Committee to evaluate, modify and/or create standard financial reports to be distributed to superintendents of annual conference ministries and other related ministries.
  • Oversee the receipt and processing of all incoming funds.
  • Oversee payment and disbursement of all routine items payable including the timely reconciliation of credit card transactions and employee expense reports.
  • Manage the processing and reconciliation of payroll for the Annual Conference.
  • Oversee reconciliation of balance sheet accounts including the reconciliation and roll forwards of designated and restricted gifts on a timely basis.
  • Prepare entries for the Annual Conference payroll and investment activities under the supervision of the Treasurer.
  • Coordinate the annual audit in consultation with the Council on Finance and Administration and under the supervision of the Treasurer.
  • Perform the monthly closure of the books and records within the designated timeframe established by the Treasurer to meet constituent needs for reporting on the Conference’s performance.
  • Facilitate production of the monthly financial statements and supplemental reports of the Conference and oversee distribution to stakeholders and department heads, and posting public facing report to website.
  • Track restrictions and designations associated with all funds of the Conference.
  • Lead internal support of the annual independent audit of the Conference’s financial results.
  • Provide support and guidance to churches regarding accounting and finance functions for the Conference and recommended procedures of church-level controls, processes, and reporting.
  • Perform miscellaneous projects as assigned by the Treasurer to help facilitate strategic planning and initiatives as they relate to the Responsible Stewardship.
  • Support the collection of annual budget data and the development of the annual budget.Assist the Treasurer to finalize and ensure its accurate entry into the accounting system.
  • Support the Treasurer in financial management of grants received and requested.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to assigned staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting is required. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a Controller role, specifically in nonprofit or church accounting, is required.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with Financial Edge software is a plus.
  • Experience with fund accounting and other non-profit accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced Microsoft Excel features.
  • Experience with various accounting and reporting platforms is highly desirable.
  • Skilled in extracting data from accounting and other Conference databases to design reports and conduct data analysis.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of the basic polity and structure of the United Methodist Church is helpful.

  • Hybrid schedule, with the expectation of in-office presence on designated days.
  • Occasional travel expected.
