Job description

Controller

Company: Legacybox
Location: Chattanooga, TN (On-site)
Type: Full-time
Salary: $120,000 - $150,000, based on experience and qualifications

About Legacybox

We help families preserve the things that only exist once.

From VHS tapes and film reels to printed photos, negatives, slides, DVDs, camcorder cassettes, memory cards, and phones, we digitize the media that matters most so families can revisit and share those moments for generations to come.

But we believe the future of Legacybox is much larger than digitization alone.

We're building a long-term family memory platform while expanding the very definition of what can be preserved.

We are not in the digitization business. We are in the irreplaceable business.

The Role

We're hiring a Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of Legacybox.

We need someone who is strong in accounting, but also understands how a business actually operates.

The Controller will own our monthly close, financial statements, general ledger, inventory and cost accounting, accounting processes, internal controls, and financial systems.

This person should be able to prepare accurate financial statements, understand what they are saying, identify when something does not make sense, and explain the important takeaways to the CFO.

We are looking for someone with good accounting judgment, strong operational instincts, and the ability to solve problems independently.

The right person will be comfortable getting into the details when necessary, but will also be able to step back, see how different parts of the business connect, and identify financial or operational issues before they become larger problems.

Ultimately, this role should make the finance function stronger and take meaningful work off the CFO's plate.

What You’ll Do
Financial Reporting & Accounting
  • Own the monthly and year-end close and ensure financial statements are accurate, complete, and delivered on time.
  • Prepare and critically review the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain a strong general ledger and ensure accounting practices are consistent with GAAP.
  • Understand and explain what is driving changes in revenue, margins, expenses, inventory, cash, and other key accounts.
  • Bring financial results to the CFO with the important changes, questions, and issues already identified, not just the numbers.
Operational Accounting & Business Support
  • Understand how customer orders, payments, purchasing, inventory, production, shipping, and other operational activity flow through the financial statements.
  • Identify where operational processes are creating accounting, reconciliation, or reporting issues and work with teams to solve them at the source.
  • Maintain strong accounting processes around inventory, cost of goods sold, accruals, purchasing, and payment processing.
  • Connect operational activity to financial results and help leadership understand why performance is changing.
  • Use sound accounting judgment and common sense to work through problems that do not always have a textbook answer.
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
  • Maintain and improve the general ledger, chart of accounts, accounting processes, and internal controls as the business grows.
  • Lead the accounting side of financial system implementations, integrations, and major system changes.
  • Ensure operational systems, e-commerce platforms, payment processors, and accounting systems tie accurately into the general ledger and financial statements.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and strengthen accounting workflows and reconciliations.
  • Take ownership of accounting and system problems and drive them through resolution rather than simply identifying them.
Team Leadership & Partnership
  • Lead and develop the finance and accounting team with clear ownership, deadlines, and expectations.
  • Review the team’s work and resolve issues before they reach the CFO.
  • Partner with the CFO on forecasting, cash flow planning, budgeting, and financial performance.
  • Work across departments to improve financial processes and support better operational decisions.
  • Serve as a trusted financial resource who can take ownership of a problem, think it through, and move it forward.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Experience owning or materially leading the monthly close and preparing a complete set of financial statements.
  • Ability to read financial statements critically, identify issues and trends, and explain what is driving the results.
  • Strong operational instincts and an understanding of how customer activity, purchasing, inventory, production, and payments flow through the financial statements.
  • Good judgment and the ability to work through accounting and operational problems independently without losing sight of the bigger picture.
  • Experience with accounting systems, financial system changes, integrations, or general ledger / chart-of-accounts improvements.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work across departments, develop the accounting team, and present financial information clearly to senior leadership.
Preferred Experience

The strongest candidates may also bring experience in some combination of the following:

  • E-commerce, consumer, manufacturing, fulfillment, or other operations-heavy businesses.
  • Inventory and cost accounting in a product-based environment.
  • High-volume transactions, payment processors, or e-commerce platforms.
  • Financial system implementations, integrations, or chart-of-accounts redesign.
  • CPA or public accounting experience.
  • Multi-state sales tax, logistics, or other complex operational accounting environments.
Why Join Us

Legacybox is a unique company with a tangible mission: helping families protect memories that cannot be replaced.

You’ll join a business where finance is closely connected to the operation itself. Our accounting team works alongside the people purchasing materials, receiving inventory, processing customer orders, digitizing memories, shipping completed projects, and building the next stage of the company.

For the right person, this role offers the opportunity to do more than manage the books. You'll have the ability to improve systems, influence how the company operates, and help build a stronger financial foundation for the future.

We value people who take ownership, ask good questions, solve problems, and make things better than they found them.
