We are seeking a hands-on Controller to oversee all accounting operations and take full ownership of the financial function across the organization.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a lean, fast-paced environment, enjoys both execution and oversight, and is comfortable managing day-to-day accounting while partnering closely with leadership on financial performance and decision-making.
The Controller will manage one Senior Property Accountant and will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, driving process improvements, and supporting the continued growth of the portfolio.
What You'll Do
Accounting Operations & Ownership
- Own the full-cycle accounting function across multiple entities and properties
- Lead and execute month-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Review and finalize financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Oversee CAM reconciliations, variance analysis, and budget vs. actual reporting
- Ensure accuracy of general ledger, intercompany activity, and financial data across the portfolio
- Manage and mentor a Senior Property Accountant
- Establish priorities, timelines, and deliverables for the accounting function
- Provide structure, accountability, and process consistency across workflows
Financial Oversight & Business Partnership
- Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and financial performance of the portfolio
- Partner with leadership on forecasting, budgeting, and strategic initiatives
- Identify inefficiencies, risks, and opportunities for improved financial performance
Process Improvement & Controls
- Build, refine, and standardize accounting processes in a growing environment
- Lead accounting cleanup efforts, including GL alignment and process improvements
- Ensure strong internal controls and audit-ready financials
External Coordination
- Partner with external CPAs, auditors, and lenders
- Collaborate closely with the CPA to ensure all financials are accurate and fully aligned for tax reporting
- Support audit preparation and compliance requirements
- Maintain accurate reporting for financing and investor needs
Qualifications
Required
- 5-10+ years of accounting experience, including time in a Controller or similar leadership role
- Experience owning full-cycle accounting and month-end close
- Prior experience managing or mentoring accounting staff
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with multi-entity or portfolio-based accounting environments
- Real estate or property management accounting experience
- Experience with CAM reconciliations and property-level financials
- Familiarity with property accounting systems (Yardi, Excel)
