Job Description

The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented, and technically competent Control Systems Technician (CST) for their state-of-the-art Wastewater Treatment Plant, a 24/7 operation treating 24 million gallons of wastewater daily for residences and businesses.

This is an on-the-job training program at Arlington County's Water Pollution Control Plant, requiring some technical experience and/or certification. Work involves planning, development, implementation, modification, testing, analysis, and evaluation of complex electronic systems within an industrial setting.

Responsibilities
  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical instrumentation.
  • Conduct predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance of computer-based process control, SCADA, and PLC systems using diagnostic tools, blueprints, factory specifications, and CMMS.
  • Analyze system failures to determine root causes or potential breakdowns.
  • Evaluate work assignments to determine scope, prioritize, and plan follow-up activities.
  • Lead projects, coordinate with other agencies or contractors, assist in staff training, and maintain records.
  • Monitor work and systems for compliance with regulations and standards.
Additional Duties for Control Systems Technician II Level
  • Perform systems analysis and diagnostics for all instrumentation and control systems in the WPCP and remote stations.
  • Design, install, maintain, and repair complex control systems in various facilities.
  • Manage input-output levels, diagnose, and resolve complex problems involving diverse designs and modifications.
Qualifications

Minimum: Positions are part of a two-level, multi-grade pay program allowing movement from Trainee to II upon meeting training, skills, and qualification requirements.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma/equivalent and successful completion of the County's technical training program.
  • Some experience in an industrial process control environment.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain ISA CCST I certification within 3 years of hire.
  • Confined Space Entry certification within 1 year of hire.

Additional qualifications differ by level, requiring specific experience and certifications as detailed in the original description.

Additional Information

Work hours: 5:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential overtime and emergency call-backs. Training and certification completion are required for advancement. Salary ranges from entry to advanced levels, with comprehensive benefits including a pension plan.
