Job summary

ASARCO LLC seeks an AHS Control Room Supervisor to lead the safe, efficient operation of MineStar Command for Hauling and the Autonomous Haulage System fleet. Job description

Also known as the AHS Supervisor, the AHS Control Room Supervisor is responsible for leading the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of MineStar Command for Hauling and the Autonomous Haulage System fleet.

The Supervisor leads and coordinates the Control Room team, including Command Controllers, Command Builders, and other AHS support personnel. The role ensures that the shift production plan is executed safely, that the autonomous fleet and virtual mine environment are managed effectively, and that operational risks, system events, and production deviations are addressed in a timely manner.

Working closely with Mine Operations, Maintenance, Mine Planning, Safety, Technical Services, Survey, IT/OT, and Caterpillar support personnel, the Supervisor provides real-time operational leadership and ensures continuity of autonomous mining operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety and Risk Management

• Provide visible safety leadership and ensure all Control Room activities comply with company policies, AOZ procedures, regulatory requirements, and established AHS operating standards.
• Ensure Controllers, Builders, and other Control Room personnel understand and comply with their assigned responsibilities, competencies, and operating limits.
• Monitor operational conditions and ensure that appropriate controls are implemented for hazards affecting autonomous operations.
• Lead the Control Room response to emergencies, A-Stops, Site Wide Stops, system outages, communication failures, weather events, and other conditions affecting safe AHS operation.
• Ensure appropriate management of exclusion zones, lane restrictions, vehicle escorts, speed restrictions, and interactions between autonomous and manned equipment.
• Escalate significant safety, operational, or system risks to the appropriate site leadership.
• Participate in incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and the development and implementation of corrective actions.

Operational Leadership

• Lead the Control Room team in executing the daily mine and maintenance plan safely and efficiently.
• Establish shift priorities and assign responsibilities to Command Controllers, Command Builders, and other AHS personnel.
• Ensure the autonomous fleet is managed to maximize safe production, fleet utilization, equipment efficiency, and compliance with the mine plan.
• Monitor production performance, truck cycles, loading-unit availability, haul routes, dump capacity, delays, system interventions, and other operational indicators.
• Identify production shortfalls and coordinate timely operational adjustments with field supervisors, Maintenance, Mine Planning, and Technical Services.
• Ensure Controllers and Builders have the information, resources, and field support required to manage the autonomous operation effectively.
• Maintain overall situational awareness of the AOZ and provide direction during complex or changing operational conditions.
• Make or authorize operational decisions when conditions require changes to assignments, mine model configuration, traffic management, or fleet operation.

AHS and MineStar Oversight

• Oversee the safe and effective use of MineStar Command for Hauling and associated fleet-management systems.
• Ensure the virtual mine model accurately reflects physical and operational conditions within the AOZ.
• Review and authorize significant changes to lanes, zones, destinations, processors, loading areas, dump areas, and other mine model elements.
• Ensure changes to the AOZ and virtual mine environment follow the applicable validation, communication, and change-management processes.
• Coordinate troubleshooting and recovery activities for system alarms, AMT stoppages, network interruptions, equipment faults, and mine model issues.
• Work with Caterpillar, technology teams, and site support groups to resolve recurring system or operational problems.Ensure critical system events and unresolved technical issues are properly documented, communicated, and escalated.

Team Leadership and Development

• Lead, motivate, coach, and develop a high-performing Control Room team.
• Promote a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and respectful communication.
• Monitor employee performance and provide regular feedback, coaching, and performance reviews.
• Ensure continuous training and competency development for Controllers, Builders, and other Control Room personnel.
• Coordinate training schedules while minimizing disruption to operational requirements.
• Maintain team competency matrices, certification records, development plans, and succession plans.
• Identify skill or knowledge gaps and coordinate refresher training or additional technical support.
• Support the onboarding, qualification, and mentoring of new Control Room employees.
• Manage team attendance, shift coverage, fatigue considerations, and staffing requirements.

Communication and Coordination

• Maintain effective communication between the Control Room and Mine Operations, Maintenance, Safety, Mine Planning, Survey, Technical Services, IT/OT, and OEM support teams.
• Participate in shift meetings, production meetings, planning meetings, and operational-readiness reviews.
• Communicate production status, operational risks, equipment constraints, system issues, and required actions to relevant stakeholders.
• Ensure accurate and complete shift handovers between Control Room crews.
• Verify the accuracy and integrity of Control Room logs, delay records, production reports, incident records, and shift summaries.
• Ensure unresolved issues and follow-up actions are clearly assigned and communicated to the incoming shift and responsible departments.

Performance and Continuous Improvement

• Monitor key AHS performance indicators, including production, utilization, availability, cycle time, delays, interventions, stoppages, compliance to plan, and system performance.
• Investigate operational deviations and identify the root causes of safety, production, process, or system shortfalls.
• Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives that improve AHS safety, reliability, productivity, and operational efficiency.
• Standardize Control Room practices, operating philosophies, shift routines, reporting, and decision‑making processes across crews.
• Support testing and implementation of MineStar updates, new equipment, system improvements, and revised operating procedures.
• Use operational data and team feedback to identify improvement opportunities and implement sustainable corrective actions.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical diploma or university degree in Mining, Engineering, Operations Management, Autonomous Systems, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Five or more years of experience in open-pit mining, mine control, dispatch, or autonomous haulage operations is preferred.
• Previous experience as a Command Controller, System Builder, Field Builder, Dispatcher, or Control Room Supervisor is highly desirable.
• Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a dynamic operational environment.
• Strong knowledge of open-pit mining fundamentals, production processes, fleet management, and autonomous mining operations.
• Experience with MineStar Command for Hauling or a comparable autonomous fleet‑management system.
• Understanding of AOZ access requirements, autonomous operating procedures, mine model management, and interaction controls between autonomous and manned equipment.
• Strong computer literacy and ability to work effectively with multiple operational, reporting, and communication systems.
• Strong leadership, coaching, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and manage multiple priorities under pressure.
• Experience with incident investigation, root‑cause analysis, risk assessment, and continuous improvement processes.
