Job description

The Superintendent - Mobile Maintenance (Mining, AHS Hauling) is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of all mobile equipment maintenance activities, including autonomous haul trucks, support equipment, and ancillary mining fleets. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of mining assets while supporting production objectives and autonomous haulage system (AHS) performance.

The Superintendent leads a high-performing team of supervisors, planners, technicians, and contractors, fostering a culture of zero‑harm, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. Key responsibilities include developing and executing maintenance strategies, driving equipment reliability and availability, managing budgets and resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting workforce development.

This position works closely with operations, engineering, OEM representatives, technology groups, and AHS vendors to optimize fleet performance, improve maintenance processes, and advance digital and reliability initiatives. Superintendent is accountable for ensuring compliance with MSHA regulations, ISO standards, site safety requirements, and AHS protocols while utilizing data-driven decision-making to enhance operational performance, reduce downtime, and support the site's long-term business objectives.

Safety Leadership & Compliance
  • Champion a zero‑harm safety culture, ensuring all maintenance activities follow MSHA, site policies, OEM guidelines, and AHS operational protocols.
  • Lead field‑level risk assessments, critical task verifications, and ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures for both manned and autonomous equipment.
  • Ensure maintenance teams understand and follow AHS exclusion zones, interaction rules, and autonomous vehicle hazard controls.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective action follow‑through.
  • Ensure the team is working safely and maintaining full compliance with ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) standards
Maintenance Strategy & Execution
  • Oversee the maintenance of mobile mining equipment, including autonomous haul trucks, manned support equipment, and ancillary fleet.
  • Develop and execute short‑-and long‑-range maintenance plans, ensuring alignment with production targets and AHS operational requirements.
  • Ensure high equipment availability and reliability through effective preventive, predictive, and condition‑based maintenance practices.
  • Manage backlog, work order quality, PM compliance, and component life tracking.
  • Optimize maintenance windows to minimize AHS downtime and maximize haulage efficiency.
AHS Integration & Performance
  • Collaborating with AHS operations, OEM support teams, and site technology groups to ensure seamless interaction between maintenance and autonomous haulage.
  • Ensure maintenance teams are trained on AHS‑specific procedures, including system resets, calibration requirements, and sensor care.
  • Monitor AHS fleet performance metrics (interventions, stoppages, sensor faults, network issues) and drive corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement of autonomous haulage workflows, maintenance readiness, and system reliability.
Leadership, Workforce Development & Culture
  • Lead a team of supervisors, planners, technicians, and contractors with clear expectations, accountability, and coaching.
  • Build a high‑performance culture focused on safety, quality, and operational discipline.
  • Identify skill gaps and implement training plans, especially in AHS technology, diagnostics, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Foster strong communication between maintenance, operations, engineering, and AHS control room teams.
Planning, Budgeting & Resource Management
  • Manage annual maintenance budgets, cost controls, and capital planning for fleet upgrades and component replacements.
  • Ensure adequate staffing, tooling, parts inventory, and contractor support to meet maintenance demand.
  • Work closely with supply chain to improve parts availability, reduce lead times, and optimize warehouse strategies.
  • Track and report KPIs such as availability, utilization, MTBF, MTTR, cost per hour, and AHS‑specific performance indicators.
Continuous Improvement & Reliability Engineering
  • Drive root cause analysis (RCA) for major failures, recurring issues, and AHS‑related stoppages.
  • Implement reliability improvements through design changes, procedural updates, and technology enhancements.
