POSITION OVERVIEW
The Office of Council Member in southern Brooklyn is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Public Relations to lead communications, media relations, messaging, and public outreach.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in multimedia journalism, public relations, or communications, with the ability to develop compelling stories, build media relationships, create engaging content, and communicate effectively with the public.
The Director will work closely with the Council Member and senior staff to develop communications strategies, manage media relations, coordinate press events, prepare speeches and statements, and oversee digital and multimedia content.
SALARY
$80,000–$120,000, depending on experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute communications, media, and public relations strategies.
- Advise the Council Member and staff on messaging and media opportunities.
- Build and maintain relationships with local, citywide, ethnic, and community media.
- Respond to media inquiries and lead rapid-response communications.
- Draft press releases, statements, talking points, speeches, op-eds, and other communications materials.
- Plan and coordinate press conferences, media events, and public announcements.
- Identify, develop, and pitch compelling stories to media outlets.
- Produce and oversee multimedia content, including videos, interviews, and social media campaigns.
- Manage website, newsletter, social media, and other digital communications.
- Ensure consistent, accurate, and effective public messaging.
- Coordinate communications with Legislative, Land Use, Finance, Constituent Services, and other teams.
- Supervise and support communications staff and media assistants.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree and 3–5 years of relevant professional experience in public relations, multimedia journalism, communications, government, public affairs, or a related field.
- Multimedia journalism or TV reporting background strongly preferred.
- Excellent writing, editing, interviewing, storytelling, and communication skills.
- Strong media relationships and knowledge of the New York City media landscape.
- Experience producing videos, conducting interviews, and creating engaging multimedia content.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong judgment, creativity, discretion, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with elected officials, government agencies, and community organizations.
- Must be available for flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when needed.
- In-person position.
- NYC residency required within 90 days of appointment.
