Job description

The Materials Research Society (MRS) is a vibrant non‑profit professional membership association of more than 15,000 materials researchers from academia, industry, and government. Headquartered in the north hills of Pittsburgh in Warrendale, Pennsylvania (USA), MRS has more than 35 employees and membership spanning over 90 countries covering a full spectrum of materials research disciplines. MRS’s mission is to engage members across generations to advance their careers and promote materials and research innovation.

What will I do?

The Content Coordinator manages content development of MRS Bulletin news, departments, and features, including coordinating freelancers, editing and writing content as needed, overseeing the peer‑review process for all technical articles, and promoting MRS Bulletin on social media.

  • Coordinate content development for MRS Bulletin news, departments, and features, working with the Editor‑in‑Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board members, and other volunteers. Edit and contribute articles as required, manage freelance writers, and develop a volunteer network.
  • Work with guest editors and authors to process and publish MRS Bulletin articles, manage the peer review process, and coordinate artwork—including covers, figures, and advertising.
  • Manage science content in MRS’s e‑newsletters Materials360® & Meeting Scene®, blogs, and webinars, working with Editorial Board, staff, and volunteers; serve as primary liaison to Multiview on newsletter content.
  • Review and edit news and department content to ensure conformity with MRS Bulletin style.
  • Collaborate with MRS marketing, Springer Nature, authors, and guest editors to promote MRS Bulletin content via social media and outreach platforms.
  • Work with the Technical Editor to oversee MRS Bulletin website content and updates.
What will make you a great fit?
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, writing, journalism, or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in magazine or journal production, technical editing, writing, and proofreading, preferably in a science‑related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and social media, plus general internet use.
  • Ability to handle, coordinate, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to build rapport and work with a broad range of individuals (scientists, researchers, experts, volunteers).
  • Understanding of print and electronic production and scheduling for a magazine or journal.
  • Excellent technical writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent organizational, reporting, and project coordination skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations and priorities.
  • Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to travel within the United States, approximately 10% annually.
