Employee may be detailed to any shift at any plant in the Raleigh District.

Duties
  1. Ensure that regulated establishments produce a safe product by executing appropriate inspection methods, determining non-compliance with regulatory requirements, documenting noncompliance and initiating enforcement action, where warranted.
  2. Verify that meat and poultry slaughter and/or processing establishment's Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans meet regulatory requirements.
  3. Verify execution of SSOP and HACCP Plans effectively to prevent unsanitary conditions and adulteration of product.
  4. Review records, observe plant operations and conduct verification to ensure compliance, and document non-compliance.
  5. Determine when regulatory control action is necessary and assess corrective or preventative actions.
  6. Conduct oversight activities relating to consumer protections like economic adulteration and misbranding.
  7. Communicate with plant managers and others to explain legal and regulatory requirements.
  8. Discuss non-compliance issues and plans for addressing them.
  9. Work with individuals to resolve problems and clarify interpretations concerning HACCP and other food safety requirements.
  10. Advise other inspectors and supervisors on inspection and enforcement matters.
  11. Conduct sampling, surveys, and tests on potential problem areas or industry trends.
  12. Perform health and safety verification sampling for microbes, residues, or contaminants.
  13. Ensure products for import comply with federal regulations and authorize entry or refuse entry as appropriate.
  14. Coordinate with other federal agencies on animal health restrictions and refused entry lots.
Requirements
  • Training as a condition of employment (TCOE) required, to be completed within 12 months.
  • Satisfactory adjudication of background check.
  • Subject to probationary or trial period.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Successful pre-employment medical exam.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification for Selective Service.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Verification through DHS E-VERIFY system.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF-306) if selected.
  • False statements can lead to disciplinary action.
  • Direct Deposit is required.
  • Proficiency in English communication skills.
  • This is a Bargaining Unit position covered by the NJC of Food Inspection Locals.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications by the closing date, including experience and education.

Specialized experience: Knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities, acquired in roles such as food inspector, public health inspector, or related positions involving sampling, quality control, and sanitation.

Specific grade level experience requirements are detailed for GS-05, GS-07, GS-08, and GS-09 levels, involving progressively independent and complex duties.

Volunteer work and unpaid experience are credited if relevant.
