Job summary

Somerset Trust Company is seeking an experienced supervisor to manage the Consumer Underwriting and Processing area. The role leads, trains, and mentors staff, ensures compliance, and collaborates with auditors and regulators to maintain accurate loan operations across the branch network.

You will develop workflows, oversee reporting, and work with management to set annual lending targets while maintaining confidentiality and high standards of service.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience.
  • Prior banking experience and knowledge of consumer lending products.
  • High school diploma or GED; some college preferred; NMLSR registration required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to train and coach staff.

Responsibilities

Summary

Manage and supervise the Consumer Underwriting and Processing area. Responsible to lead, train and supervise these employees to ensure department meets organizational goals. Responsible for working with auditors and examiners of loan operation activities and reviewing relevant reports for accuracy and trends, as required. Communicate with bank management to promote efficient and accurate work flows while also establishing positive and respectful working relationships between bank management and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interact with operations staff to improve accuracy, identify operational efficiencies, and streamline processes.
  • Manage relationships and coordinate efforts with Lenders, Consumer Real Estate Originators, Operations staff and Senior Management.
  • Develop and maintain work flows while ensuring proper segregation of duties.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Coach each staff member with detailed plan on regular basis to help develop staff so they can reach their full potential.
  • Interview, hire and ensure adequate training for employees for the department; plan, assign, and direct work; employee performance management; address complaints and resolve problems.
  • Assist the Sr. Consumer Lending Officer with working with the Risk Manager, Internal Auditor, Compliance Officer, Regulator and External Auditor for audit and compliance issues.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance and communication of all internal and external factors affecting consumer lending. Which would include rates, fees, competition, new products, loan volume, trends and branch lending concerns.
  • Assist to develop annual targets/goals for consumer lending.
  • Collect and research data; use intuition and experience to complement data; design work flows and procedures while considering risks and controls; perform due diligence on systems and vendors.
  • Develop project plans; coordinate projects and communicate progress; complete projects on time; work on various projects simultaneously, and display the ability to prioritize.
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information; develop alternative solutions; work well in group problem solving situations; use reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
  • Analyze loan reports, charge off’s, exceptions and make recommendations when necessary.
  • Understand and learn business objectives and services and the related risks and controls for the day-to-day consumer lending operations of the branch network.
  • Adhere to all State and Federal Banking Regulations, receive and research new regulations, policies and procedures and review with the Sr. Consumer Lending Officer for implementation. Stay current on compliance and regulations by attending seminars and reading available information. Ensure necessary changes or recommendations have been implemented as directed.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality with all information obtained.
  • Responsible for completion of applicable training and compliance on federal regulations, policies and procedures as related to the duties of this position (Bank Secrecy Act, Information Security as examples, if applicable).
  • Understand and support all BSA/AML responsibilities as applicable to the position as well as consistently, accurately, and timely carry out these responsibilities in compliance with the Bank’s internal policies
  • Perform other related work and duties as assigned
Education and/or Experience

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of supervisory and leadership experience. Consumer loan management experience preferred. The candidate should have prior banking experience and a detailed knowledge of consumer lending products. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Some college background strongly preferred, but not required. Registration required with Mortgage Licensing System Registry (NMLSR) and must obtain a unique identifier that will be provided to customers. Good understanding of financial institution products and services are essential.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Ability to operate a personal computer and job-related software. (Web-based systems, Word, Excel, Core Operating System DNA). Must be willing to learn new systems and not have any issues with emerging technology.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals. Ability to write business correspondence, and policies using proper grammar and accurate spelling.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and interest, etc.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSCIAL DEMANDS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use hands and fingers to operate office equipment, telephones, etc.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
