Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Consulting Engineer Systems based in the United States.

We are seeking an experienced technical leader to shape the architecture, engineering, and long-term performance of a large-scale enterprise technology portfolio. In this strategic role, you will oversee approximately 190 platforms and applications supporting critical business functions across a complex, highly regulated environment. You will define enterprise architecture standards, guide modernization initiatives, and ensure that technology investments deliver measurable business value. Working closely with senior executives, architects, engineers, and business stakeholders, you will influence high-impact technical decisions and establish consistent engineering practices. You will also drive platform rationalization, strengthen cybersecurity, and improve system reliability, scalability, and integration. This opportunity is ideal for a seasoned technology leader who combines deep technical expertise with strategic vision and a passion for developing engineering talent.

Accountabilities
  • Enterprise Architecture and Technical Leadership: Lead architecture and engineering strategy across a portfolio of approximately 190 enterprise platforms and applications, ensuring alignment with business priorities, technical standards, and long-term organizational objectives.
  • Platform Performance and Lifecycle Management: Oversee the technical health, reliability, scalability, cybersecurity, and lifecycle strategy of enterprise applications, identifying opportunities to improve resilience and operational performance.
  • Architecture Standards and Integration: Define and maintain enterprise technical strategies, reference architectures, governed data practices, and integration patterns to promote consistency, interoperability, and reuse across platforms.
  • Strategic Technology Decisions: Provide independent technical guidance for major investments, modernization programs, and critical design decisions, including architecture assessments, trade studies, and risk evaluations.
  • Portfolio Optimization: Drive platform rationalization, reduce redundant solutions, improve integration, minimize technical debt, and identify opportunities to lower long-term technology costs.
  • Engineering Excellence: Partner with architecture, governance, strategy, and engineering teams to implement disciplined systems and software engineering practices, including requirements management, design reviews, automated testing, and verification and validation.
  • Performance Measurement and Continuous Improvement: Establish and monitor technical performance indicators such as availability, reliability, incident rates, deployment frequency, change lead time, and technical debt, using insights to guide improvement initiatives.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with senior business leaders, portfolio owners, and technology stakeholders to ensure application strategies support operational requirements and evolving business priorities.
  • Technical Governance: Lead or participate in architecture reviews, design reviews, technical assessments, and governance checkpoints to maintain quality, consistency, security, and accountability.
  • Mentorship and Capability Development: Coach and mentor architects and senior engineers, promote knowledge sharing, and build a strong community of practice in enterprise platform and application engineering.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related technical discipline with at least 16 years of relevant experience; a master's degree with at least 14 years; or a PhD with at least 11 years of relevant experience.
  • Senior Technical Leadership: Demonstrated experience as a chief architect, chief engineer, or equivalent technical leader responsible for large-scale software portfolios, complex enterprise environments, and supplier-heavy technology ecosystems.
  • Enterprise Solution Architecture: Proven ability to architect and deliver complex technology solutions across multiple business and technical domains, balancing enterprise-wide standards with individual platform requirements.
  • Modern Technology Expertise: Strong knowledge of modern application and platform technologies, including one or more of the following: public, private, or hybrid cloud; microservices and API-driven architectures; containerization; enterprise integration frameworks; event-driven systems and messaging; data platforms, data warehouses, data lakes, analytics environments; or artificial intelligence.
  • Software Engineering and DevOps: A solid understanding of modern DevOps practices, particularly automated testing, including unit, integration, regression, and performance testing.
  • Technical Governance and Optimization: Experience with architecture standards, technical reviews, modernization programs, portfolio rationalization, and technical debt reduction. Knowledge of cybersecurity, identity and access management, and data protection is highly valuable.
  • Leadership and Mentoring: Experience leading cross-functional technical teams, influencing stakeholders without relying solely on formal authority, and developing engineers and architects at different career levels.
  • Communication and Strategic Influence: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical teams, business stakeholders, and C-suite executives.
  • Preferred Industry Experience: Experience in large, complex organizations, ideally within regulated, defense, aerospace, or similarly demanding environments. Familiarity with ITIL and enterprise platforms supporting finance, human resources, business development, supply chain, security, legal, communications, or program management is an advantage.
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications: Experience working across business or operational functions, contributions to industry standards, publications, patents, or professional bodies, and a location near a major company site are considered beneficial.
  • Work Authorization and Availability: Ability to work remotely within the United States and travel approximately 10% of the time. No security clearance is required to start this position.
Benefits
  • Competitive Compensation: Annual base salary ranging from $192,800 to $289,200, depending on experience, education, skills, role responsibilities, and market conditions.
  • Potential Additional Compensation: Depending on eligibility, opportunities for discretionary annual bonuses, overtime, shift differentials, or long-term incentives for certain leadership positions.
  • Healthcare Coverage: Access to health insurance, life insurance, and disability coverage.
  • Retirement Savings: A 401(k) savings plan with company matching.
  • Paid Time Off: Company-paid holidays and paid time off for vacation and personal needs.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements: Remote work options and flexible arrangements designed to support productivity and work-life balance.
  • Alternative Work Schedule: Availability of a 9/80 schedule option, subject to applicable team and business requirements.
  • Professional Development: Access to learning opportunities, diverse technical projects, and opportunities to expand expertise across enterprise platforms and emerging technologies.
  • Collaborative Environment: The opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams, influence enterprise-wide technology decisions, and contribute to meaningful, mission-driven programs.
  • Career Growth: Exposure to complex systems, strategic initiatives, and senior leadership, with opportunities to broaden technical influence and professional capabilities.
