Job summary

J2 Engineers Inc. is seeking a seasoned land survey technician to convert field data into precise maps and plans using Carlson software. You will prepare survey drawings, assist with stakeout, and maintain project documentation while adhering to safety guidelines.

The role requires strong CAD skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with senior engineers and surveyors to meet schedules and budgets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in GIS or related field preferred.
  • Five years of experience in land surveying.
  • Working knowledge of CAD concepts and Carlson software.
  • Ability to interpret field data, sketches, and written/verbal instructions with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare survey drawings, maps, layouts, arrangements, and flow sheets using field data and direction.
  • Transform raw field data from survey crews into final maps and plans using Carlson software.
  • Import electronic field notes and manage field data files as needed.
  • Prepare surfaces, finalize base maps, and complete revisions based on redlines.
  • Assist with construction stakeout layout and preparation of cut sheets.
  • Set up and maintain drawing files per company standards and project requirements.
  • Support the Project Surveyor, Survey Party Chief, and engineers in project tasks.
  • Help prepare field crews and equipment for survey assignments.
  • Support various survey types including boundary, ALTA/NSPS, topographic, and GPS work.
  • Communicate with crew members and supervisors to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Maintain accurate field notes and project documentation.
  • Follow safety requirements and care for equipment and company property.

Description

Key responsibilities include:



  • Prepare survey drawings, maps, layouts, arrangements, and flow sheets using field data, sketches, existing utility mapping, and written or verbal direction

  • Transform raw field data from survey crews into final maps and plans using Carlson software

  • Import electronic field notes and upload, download, and reduce data-collector files as needed

  • Prepare surfaces, finalize base maps, and complete revisions based on redlines while verifying quantities and accuracy

  • Assist with construction stakeout layout and preparation of cut sheets

  • Set up and maintain drawing files in accordance with company drafting standards and project requirements

  • Accurately execute markups and support the Project Surveyor, Survey Party Chief, Survey Manager, engineers, and other senior team members

  • Help prepare field crews and equipment for survey assignments

  • Support boundary, ALTA/NSPS land title, topographic, location, and as-built surveys, as well as construction stakeout, GPS, deed research, photogrammetric control, and hydraulic survey work

  • Communicate with crew members and supervisors to help keep projects on schedule and within budget

  • Maintain clean, legible field notes and proper project documentation

  • Follow company, client, local, state, and federal safety requirements, including proper use and care of personal protective equipment

  • Help maintain, clean, and care for survey vehicles, equipment, and other company property


Requirements


  • Five years of experience in the land surveying industry

  • Bachelor of Science in geographic information systems (GIS) or a related field preferred

  • Working knowledge of CAD concepts and an interest in developing proficiency with Carlson and other software used by J2

  • Basic understanding of—or willingness to learn—survey equipment, geometry, field procedures, and data collection

  • Ability to interpret field data, sketches, markups, and written and verbal instructions with attention to detail

  • Strong organization, time-management, problem-solving, and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative office and field team

  • Dependability, flexibility, and a commitment to quality, safety, and meeting deadlines
