Job summary

J2 is seeking an experienced land survey professional in Dumfries, VA to prepare and transform survey drawings and maps using Carlson software. You will manage field data, assist with stakeouts, and support senior staff across boundary and topographic surveys, GPS work, and deed research.

The role emphasizes accurate data interpretation, team collaboration, and adherence to safety standards while maintaining project documentation and equipment care.

Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in land surveying.
  • Bachelor of Science in GIS or related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of CAD concepts; interest in Carlson and related software used by J2.
  • Basic understanding of survey equipment, geometry, field procedures, and data collection.
  • Ability to interpret field data, sketches, markups, and written/verbal instructions with attention to detail.
  • Strong organization, time management, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team; dependable and safety-focused.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare survey drawings, maps, layouts, arrangements, and flow sheets from field data and direction.
  • Transform raw field data into final maps and plans using Carlson software.
  • Import electronic field notes and manage data-collector files.
  • Prepare surfaces, base maps, and revisions, verifying quantities and accuracy.
  • Assist with construction stakeout layout and cut sheet preparation.
  • Maintain drawing files per drafting standards and project needs.
  • Execute markups and support senior project team members.
  • Prepare field crews and equipment for survey assignments.
  • Support boundary, ALTA/NSPS land title, topographic, and various surveys; GPS, deed research, photogrammetric control, and hydraulic surveys.
  • Communicate with crew and supervisors to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Maintain legible field notes and proper documentation.
  • Follow safety requirements and properly care for equipment.

  • Transform raw field data from survey crews into final maps and plans using Carlson software
  • Import electronic field notes and upload, download, and reduce data-collector files as needed
  • Prepare surfaces, finalize base maps, and complete revisions based on redlines while verifying quantities and accuracy
  • Assist with construction stakeout layout and preparation of cut sheets
  • Set up and maintain drawing files in accordance with company drafting standards and project requirements
  • Accurately execute markups and support the Project Surveyor, Survey Party Chief, Survey Manager, engineers, and other senior team members
  • Help prepare field crews and equipment for survey assignments
  • Support boundary, ALTA/NSPS land title, topographic, location, and as-built surveys, as well as construction stakeout, GPS, deed research, photogrammetric control, and hydraulic survey work

Requirements
  • Five years of experience in the land surveying industry
  • Bachelor of Science in geographic information systems (GIS) or a related field preferred
  • Working knowledge of CAD concepts and an interest in developing proficiency with Carlson and other software used by J2
  • Basic understanding of—or willingness to learn—survey equipment, geometry, field procedures, and data collection
  • Ability to interpret field data, sketches, markups, and written and verbal instructions with attention to detail
  • Strong organization, time-management, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative office and field team
