Job Title: Construction Superintendent – Community Solar Projects

Job Description

This role oversees day-to-day construction activities for multiple community solar projects across Illinois, typically ranging from 1 to 2.5 MW in size. The Construction Superintendent manages on-site operations from the project trailer, coordinates subcontractors, enforces safety standards, and ensures that each project progresses according to schedule and quality expectations. This is a project-based contract opportunity with the potential to gain substantial experience in the renewable energy industry and the possibility of future full-time employment.

Responsibilities
  • Manage daily on-site construction operations for community solar projects, working primarily from the project trailer.
  • Oversee and coordinate electrical and civil subcontractors, including working closely with their forepersons to ensure efficient execution of work.
  • Handle on-site administrative duties, including documentation, reporting, and communication with the senior construction leadership team.
  • Report directly to the senior Construction Manager and prepare and submit daily progress and safety reports.
  • Enforce all safety and regulatory policies and procedures to maintain a safe and compliant worksite.
  • Set and monitor daily and weekly productivity standards for contractors and subcontractors.
  • Develop and maintain a three-week look-ahead schedule and collaborate with the senior Construction Manager to ensure milestones and overall project schedule are met.
  • Coordinate deliveries of materials and equipment with the logistics team and subcontractors to avoid delays and keep work flowing smoothly.
  • Review and interpret construction blueprints, project plans, and technical specifications on a daily basis to guide field activities.
  • Use Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PDF applications, to manage documentation, reports, and schedules.
  • Support effective communication among project stakeholders, including internal teams and external vendors.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and accountability on the job site.
Essential Skills

  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple subcontractors and sub vendors effectively on an active construction site.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, schematics, and project plans.
  • Technical degree in Engineering or Construction Management, or extensive, demonstrated construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, and strong overall computer literacy.
  • Experience working with PDF documents and digital project documentation.
  • Current OSHA 10 certification.
  • OSHA 30 certification or willingness to obtain it, with support available through provided training if needed for strong candidates.
  • Solid understanding of construction safety practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong organizational, scheduling, and time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with senior management, subcontractors, and on-site personnel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in solar construction projects or the broader renewable energy industry.
  • Electrician or electrical construction experience, particularly in commercial settings.
  • Familiarity with community solar project structures and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to transition between projects and adapt to new sites and teams.
  • Interest in long-term career opportunities within the renewable energy sector.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with senior construction leadership.
Work Environment

The position is based on active solar construction sites across central and northwest Illinois, with primary work conducted from a company trailer on each project. The environment includes multiple electrical and civil subcontractors working simultaneously, creating a dynamic and fast-paced field setting. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., averaging about 40 hours per week. Overtime must be approved by a supervisor and is not expected to be a regular feature of this role. Dress code is standard construction attire, such as jeans and a t-shirt, combined with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required on site.
