Job description

Brown and Caldwell is seeking a Health and Safety Professional to join our Municipal delivery team. Reporting to the IPD H&S Manager, the Construction Safety Officer (CSO) will collaborate with the IPD H&S Manager, local management, and team members to support environmental, health, and safety management on construction sites. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, be highly organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a diverse team environment. The project site is located in Fort Gratiot, MI.

Detailed Description:

This in-person role is based at the Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant in Fort Gratiot, MI, supporting construction improvements at the facility. The CSO will lead the environmental, health, and safety program for Phase 2 of a design-build project, overseeing safety performance and compliance of BC employees and subcontractors.

  1. Coordinate with project leaders to identify and address EHS concerns, suggest improvements, and implement solutions.
  2. Participate in construction meetings and manage comprehensive H&S programs at the site.
  3. Conduct safety orientations for team members and subcontractors.
  4. Implement safety plans and manage compliance with regulatory and company standards.
  5. Guide project teams and subcontractors on H&S requirements, ensuring adherence to guidelines.
  6. Maintain and analyze H&S metrics, producing trend reports.
  7. Develop Site-Specific Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  8. Lead safety meetings and inspections, and document findings for corrective actions.
  9. Oversee emergency plans and drills, and coordinate safety training.
  10. Maintain safety documentation and reports.
  11. Support internal safety initiatives and policies, participate in workgroups, and develop new safety programs.
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 6 years of construction safety management experience on large projects.
  • BCSP safety certification (e.g., CSP, ASP, CHST) preferred; OSHA 30-hour training required.
  • Proficiency in electrical hazard mitigation, NFPA 70E standards, and construction safety standards (29 CFR 1926, 1910).
  • Experience with water/wastewater treatment plant projects and traffic control plans is a plus.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and training skills.
  • Ability to work in the field year-round, with physical requirements including lifting, walking, climbing, and working in extreme conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel up to 10%.
Salary Range:

Estimated starting pay ranges from $88,000 to $120,000, depending on location, skills, and experience.
