Job summary

Benchmark Utility Services is seeking an Assistant Safety Manager to help develop and oversee safety protocols across active construction sites in Virginia. The role collaborates with field crews and management to communicate emergency procedures and PPE usage, ensuring compliance with OSHA and company policies.

You will report to Senior Safety Manager and Safety Manager. Ideal candidates bring at least two years in safety within underground utility construction, OSHA 510 or STSC certification,

Qualifications

• Two or more years in a safety-related role, ideally in underground utility construction.
• OSHA 510 certification, or Safety Trained Supervisor–Construction (STSC).
• First Aid, CPR, and AED certification valid.

Responsibilities

• Assist in implementing and monitoring the SHMS and ensure OSHA/DOT policy compliance.
• Conduct site inspections and safety audits; identify hazards and corrective actions.
• Facilitate JHAs, Pre-Task Plans, and Tailgate Safety Meetings.
• Monitor PPE use and ensure crews are properly equipped.
• Participate in incident investigations; assist root-cause analysis.
• Maintain safety documentation, inspection records, training logs, and incident reports.
• Provide field-level support during high-risk activities (excavation, trenching, confined spaces, equipment operation).
• Promote a positive safety culture and build relationships with field staff.
• Present safety information and documentation to General Contractors (GCs).
• Perform other duties as assigned.
