Job Description

WSP is searching for a Part Time Solid Waste (landfill) and Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Engineering Technician to join our Civil, Ground Engineering & Materials team in Michigan. The selected candidate will conduct landfill and CCR CQA observation, monitoring, and testing services for earthen and geosynthetic containment systems in local, national, and private facilities. Additional duties may include supporting environmental or geotechnical investigations and other field-related activities.

Your Impact
  • Field monitoring, testing, and sampling of soil and aggregate materials
  • Use of a nuclear gauge and drive cylinder for soil density testing
  • Geosynthetics monitoring and testing
  • General construction observation and documentation
  • Interpret construction documents (drawings, technical specifications, and CQA plans) to confirm compliance
  • Interact with contractors and owners constructively to resolve construction issues
  • Generate accurate and concise documentation using electronic systems and a field/notebook system
  • Assist with additional field activities such as drilling, stormwater sampling, and groundwater sampling
  • Participate and contribute to daily safety meetings
  • Operate vehicles safely on behalf of the company
  • Maintain quality control standards for precise measurement and documentation
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Geosynthetics Certification Institute-Inspector Certification Program (GCI-ICP) certification for compacted soil liner and geosynthetics (or the ability to obtain certification)
  • MDOT Construction Materials Testing – Soils or ability to obtain certification
  • MDOT Construction Materials Testing – Concrete or ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (or ability to obtain certification)
  • Subject to client‑mandated drug/alcohol testing policy
  • Perform duties within established deadlines while maintaining accuracy
  • Travel required: 90%
  • Daily reporting and construction documentation required
  • Communicate constructively with contractors, owners, and Project Managers
  • Meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
  • Perform basic arithmetic with all units of measure, including rates, ratios, and percent calculations
  • Analytical mindset and sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions
  • Maintain workplace safety and abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies
  • Work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Work independently and as part of a team, self‑motivation, and strong work ethic
  • Ability to regularly lift/unload up to 49 pounds unaided and 50–100 pounds with assistance or proper controls
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, and climb or balance as required by the job
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation, and communication software
  • Proficient self‑leadership with attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment
  • Work up to 12 hours outdoors in hot or cold environments safely
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or four‑year degree
  • Understanding of civil and geotechnical engineering design and earthworks construction, including reading technical civil design drawings and specifications
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • OSHA 40‑hour HazWoper training and certificate
  • Experience with on‑site geotechnical and geosynthetic testing
