Job summary

S&ME is seeking Construction Materials Engineering Technicians to perform field and laboratory testing on concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates in Columbia, SC. You will collect samples, interpret results, and prepare reports while collaborating with engineers and project teams.

Positions span entry to senior levels with opportunities for leadership and mentoring. Overtime, travel per diem, and lodging are provided as needed; a valid driver's license and background checks are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred for advanced levels.
• Active industry certifications such as ACI and ICC.
• Strong English communication skills (verbal and written).
• Basic math proficiency including measurements and units of weight.
• Willingness to travel and flexibility with schedule.

Responsibilities

• Perform field and laboratory testing on concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
• Collect and prepare samples for analysis.
• Interpret test results and prepare detailed reports.
• Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers to meet specs and safety guidelines.

Construction Materials Engineering Technicians

S&ME is searching for motivated and hard-working Construction Materials Engineering Technicians at all experience levels to join our Construction Services group in Columbia, South Carolina.

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects, from local eateries to major sports venues, are built with quality and safety at the forefront. Whether you're new to the field or bring years of expertise, you'll receive hands‑on training, mentorship, and opportunities to advance. Seasoned professionals can take on leadership roles, guiding projects and mentoring colleagues.

Your Day-to-Day:

• Field & Lab Testing: Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
• Sample Collection & Prep: Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
• Data Interpretation & Reporting: Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
• Team Collaboration & Compliance: Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.

Experience shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half). Occasional travel to support other offices is covered with per diem and lodging.

What You Bring:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels
  • Associate Technician/Technician I: 0-2 years relevant experience
  • Technician II: 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
  • Technician III: 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
  • Technician IV: 5+ years of relevant experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus
• Active Industry certifications such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician, and/or International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
• Strong English communication skills (verbal and written)
• Basic math proficiency, including an understanding of measurements and units of weight
• The understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel
• Valid U.S. driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) valid for driving in the United States, with an acceptable driving record
• Ability to safely operate a company-assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs
• Willingness to complete a background check, driving record check and drug screen upon offer of employment

Compensation and technician level will be based on experience and industry certifications.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

• Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods
• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
• Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
