The Development Design and Construction Manager leads and coordinates design, preconstruction, construction, and project closeout activities for new and renovated multifamily residential projects. Working in partnership with the development team, the role contributes from project inception and feasibility through construction completion and turnover to asset and property management. The Manager is responsible for advancing project design and construction objectives, managing cost and schedule risks, coordinating consultants and contractors, and providing clear reporting to senior leadership.

Responsibility and Decision-Making

The Development Design and Construction Manager is responsible for leading assigned design and construction activities, coordinating project participants, identifying and managing risks, and escalating material issues to senior leadership with clear analysis and recommended actions. The role exercises judgment within delegated authority and applicable company procedures. Contract commitments, approvals, and decisions affecting project scope, cost, or schedule must follow established approval requirements. The general contractor remains responsible for its construction means and methods, sequencing, and site safety.

Qualifications

• Experience: At least five years of construction management experience involving new or renovated multifamily residential projects, with a general contractor or as an owner’s representative for a residential developer.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
• Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents; experience with construction budgeting, procurement, scheduling, change management, and project closeout.
• Project Management and Communication: Strong organization, communication, and decision-making skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple projects, evaluate competing priorities, and communicate project issues and recommendations clearly.
• Preferred Background: Familiarity with affordable housing development and financing-program requirements. Demonstrated ability and willingness to mentor junior staff members.
• Technology: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Experience with construction and project-management tools such as Bluebeam, Procore, Primavera, Smartsheet, or comparable platforms is preferred.

Work Location and Compensation

This is an in-person position based at SCG Development’s office in Tysons, Virginia. Local travel and periodic site visits are required. Compensation, including salary, annual bonus, profit sharing, and benefits, will be commensurate with experience.
